How Do You Store a Lit Bowl

If you dont have 30 seconds to let a pipe go out, you need to slooooow down man.
But anyways, ive just set down a burning pipe and walked away no less than 11,276 times over the last 3 decades.
One time I thought my cat was having a conniption fit, or had went looney, but she had just sniffed my lit pipe and had a sneezing fit.
Thats the only notable thing ive noticed from doing this practice.

The main issue here is the weather. I'd leave it outside but I live in the very North of Europe and the weather is terrible most of the time.

I leave mine out under an awning roof. Year round over night. Hot humid/cold freezing and go back and light them up. You could always get something like a metal tool box and leave it in if you do not have some sort of outdoor roof.

I drop "lit" pipes into my pocket all the time.

I guess that depends on the pipe. Last winter I was shoveling snow from the front walk in sub-freezing temperatures while smoking a big Castello apple. It began to be a bit much to clench, so I sat it down on the porch table. I forgot about it, finished shoveling and went inside. I came out 20 minutes later to get it and took a puff and it fired right up without a relight. Everything they say about the quality of Castello’s aged briar is true so far as keeping a pipe burning. Now, if they would only let me use it in the NASPC’s next slow smoke competition…

Personally, I stick a wine bottle cork in the pipe.

Call me paranoid, but my lit pipes never go into the house, a pouch, or my pocket. If I need to step away mid-smoke, I either make sure it's completely out or set the pipe down on a non-flammable surface out of the wind.

Well.. when being called tondo something while smoking, the 30 secs aren't always available. My thought though is, that the pipe could just as well spend those 30 seconds going out in the pouch.

Cut off air and it will go out quickly. Like snuffing out a candle. No need to wait.

I use these leather 'pipe socks' from Al Pascia when I'm walking the dog and they work really well for me:

I’ll pass, but the Leatherman XL pouch that I’ve always got has a perfect spot and gets used all the time. I’m sure I’ll jinx myself, but I hop in and out of trucks, off and on equipment, anytime I need both hands. Usually stays packed just fine too.


For momentary (or longer) mid-smoke it goes in my t-shirt pocket where the bic and golf tee live.
If it’s too hot to do that, my cadence sucks.

I’ve often tucked a lit bowl into a jacket pocket when slipping into a store to buy a few things. Then I pull out the pipe and just keep smoking, often without a relight.

There is rarely a day that goes by that I don't extinguish a pipe mid smoke to finish it later. I usually do this by covering the bowl with my lighter. It extinguishes the ember and just a few seconds. I usually cover the bowl with a wind cap and stick it in pocket until I'm ready to finish it. Easy Peezy.

It was usually my neighborhood Trader Joe's. I'd be in and out in 10 to 15 minutes, pull out the pipe, give it a few puffs and it would come back to life. But it also depends on the blend. C&D Yorktown would smolder nicely while in my pocket in the store and come right back with just a little encouragement.

Im wondering what blends are actually going to be smokeless after a half hour or whole day in the pipe.

The secret is, to treat every half smoked bowl as if it's the very last of your tobacco.

I usually set it somewhere for a few minutes so it can cool before putting it in a pouch. I would also recommend buying a couple of the small metal wind-screens that cover the bowl. I've found these to be great for keeping tobacco contained if I'm loading a pipe to take with me on the go. They might also be good for protecting your pouch from a warm cherry or any stray embers that may escape.
