Cracked pipe

A large majority of the pipemakers I know and have worked with over the years gave up on it after using it several times. Too splintery, too fragile overall regarding impacts, and prone to charring/burning.

I thought about trying some years ago, I'm glad I never went through with it. Sounds like something I don't want to deal with.

Thanks for all the replies, and you're absolutely correct -- it's a morta. I knew that and misspoke. I think I'll avoid trying any repairs or smoking it in this condition. Instead, I'll retire it to the display rack. It's not like I don't have other pipes!

It's a shame, though. As I recall, I paid about $300-$400 for that pipe.

A little Super Glue should solve the problem. Use the thin, wattery, type not the thick stuff. Get it down in the cracks and quickly wipe off the excess. It may not look pretty, but the pipe should be good for years.

On ebay they merely repair that by slathering epoxy

It's toast. I'd do a cosmetic repair on it and relegate it to display status.

Sorry for your loss, brother. I dropped a pipe in front of a crowd once and was blessed with it's survival. Condolences on the loss of a really nice pipe.

I dropped a pipe in front of a crowd once and was blessed with it's survival.

It was back in 1963... I drove an MG-A and smoked a Castello. One day I absent mindedly sat the pipe up on top of the dash board. I forgot it was there when I got in the car and took off like any normal teenager with a lead foot. Everything was fine until I made a sharp right turn and my eye caught a glimpse of the pipe as it shot across the dash and out the car. I heard a "crack" sound from the street and my heart sank. I had broken my one and only good pipe that I had recently paid $25 for.... which was a lot in those days. I turned around and went back for it and to my great surprise there it was on the pavement, up against the curb and without a scratch. I'm smoking it right now! That's her in the upper left of the picture. By the way, I still have and smoke all 5 of them.

Great story!! Glad it survived. Castello pipes, heck any pipe, shouldn't go out like that.
