I just recently learned that true Djarum kretek aren't available anymore in the US. The currently available versions are a poor replacement. Yes, I miss the ones from the 80's, with enough clove oil that it soaked the paper. The cigarette was always white with brown speckles.

I don't find Bosun even close, though a many apparently do.

djarum black cigarettes, not the cigars, those were fire back in the day. I tell you a good cigarette is the American Spirit Black with Perique. Those are good. I Use to like Marlboro Reds and Newport non-menthal, but they are too expensive now, I buy lucky strikes if I buy em at all now. Guy above said cigarettes are the turnip of the tobacco world. Lol I like that, thats true.

I’m working through some Bosun Cut Plug, and it isn’t scratching the clove itch for me, either. I’ve read that the clove oil will flash off quickly, so that may be the case with my sample. It’s still a good smoke after I recalibrate my expectations.

Indonesian kreteks
The clove bits have a habit of causing mini-explosions.
You can tell a habitual kretek smoker by the little burn marks/holes in their clothing
😁
I ground the cloves fine enough no mini explosions or even crackling. I do get the flavor, nice, I rather like it. I have just the right amount so it is a good condiment, without being overwhelming.
