Do Peterson p-lips just change tongue bite into roof-of-mouth bite?
If you're determined to get bit, they will accommodate you but in general, my experience is "no". Same as someone above, if I've worn out the roof of my mouth I've had too many bowls in way too short a time. I suppose if you are pre-disposed to tongue bite physically it may be an issue, but can't speak to that.

I've certainly done it, but just like regular bits, it is mostly a cadence problem.

It also makes a difference if you are using a system versus a non-system pipe. The full system (including the condenser) makes a tremendous difference in allowing steam to condense and drop out of the smoke, helping the tobacco smoke cooler, which ultimately reduces the chance of "roof" bite...

The roof of the mouth is less sensitive then the tongue so if it did that would be a sign of really over smoking.

Are you using a filter with the full system?

For unknown reasons the roof of my mouth is more sensitive. I think its more chemical than an issue of steam. I steer away from p-lips.

All that said, if its chemical it MIGHT not make much difference. I have not experimented to find out simply becuase it seems like Id be tempting fate for no potential gain.

The best way to find out is to try one with an open mind and find out for yourself.
Tongue bite has been a thing for as long as pipe smoking has been around-just look at the near infinite amount of gadgetry and designs that have been made to provide a “cooler, drier” smoke over the years.

The fact that Charles Peterson’s “p-lip” has been in production and demand for over 125yrs speaks volumes, whether “Internet influencers” or just sage smokers with decades of experience share that they like them or hate them.

One thing is for certain, like a new tobacco blend, you can’t rely on anecdote to know what you will actually like. You must try and find if it works for you by personal experience and giving something a fair shake.
Fun to talk about, but until you find out for yourself, it’s all speculative.

I really like them, but also like other bits. I do feel they are a must for a Peterson to be a system, as they are a design feature of what makes the actual system (regardless of if the factory sells “system” pipes with fishtails or not-that is about options to make money).

Very helpful thanks

I'm also in the same boat. Even a fishtail can cause roof discomfort while my tongue remains happy as a clam.
