I need some advice on this pipe. Should i be even attempting to fix the chips on the rim? If yes does anyone have any experience with clay? I have some ideas but I am not sure and I don't want to accidentally damage the pipe even further.

You can patch it I guess. But the patches will stand out. They’ll color differently if at all depending on what you use. The chips are to big to reduce.
On the other hand, you could go for the Greek urn museum repair where the patch shows but blends into the shape so well that it doesn’t detract from the overall appearance.
It’s a clay so maybe a similar material mixed like spackle? Or maybe just actual spackle. Fill the chips and gently resurface the whole bowl to blend it.

So crusher clay from another pipe layered with CA glue would be a bad idea? I was going to test it out on another pipe first of course.

I’ve used plaster of Paris to repair meershaum cups/bowl linings. I’m not sure if it would work in this setting or not, but if you try it and don’t like it you can always pick it out.

IMO, what ever you do won't be authentic. It's your pipe but if it were me, I'd clean it up and let the love nicks alone. I think its a great story teller. Guy probably banged his pipe on the brick streets of Dublin to clean it out😂
hmm i think you got me there with the brick streets 🤣 i think I actually might do that. Plus i found a second clay pipe, this time unsmoked 🤫

What to use as a binder is the question. Any kind of glue will really stand out. I’m thinking just try water to start. A matte patch might be preferable to a shiny one.
There’s a nugget in the back of my mind that egg white is a good binder. I haven’t used it though.

I thought no i might try some of those methods since they all sound not permanent and if I don't like how they look i could just revert to the original.
