Finally overcame my indecisiveness on what new tin to crack open:

Pesse Canoe Purple Pearl Turkish Oriental Flake. Peterson SPD 2011 (221). Broke up the flake into small crumbles. It's burning beautifully and really pleasant. It's lightly aromatic, described as "red berries/fruit." 🍓🫐🍒 The topping is not strong at all -- slight perfume characteristic. (I.e., it's nothing like Sutliff Black Cordial; here you actually taste the quality tobacco blend of oriental, burley and virginia. Don't get me wrong, I love me some Black Cordial!)

Earl Grey tea. :coffee:

Did a little low calorie snacking, and am smoking year 2016 Hearth & Home AJ’s Vaper in a pre-1952 Sutliff Falcon 372 (made by Comoy’s) smooth light brown straight bulldog with a tapered black vulcanite stem. Watching Alfred Hitchcock Presents.

Now smoking year 2000 SWRA in a straight smooth 2024 Peterson Red Killarney 264 Canadian with metal accents around the shank and a black acrylic p-lip stem. Gave Daisy the Feral Princess a snack, and then she wanted out after being by my feet for hours. Tomato the Brave and Harry the Hairy came in. As long as they behave I'll have quiet reading time.

Snacked on a small red delicious apple, and am smoking year 2020 D&R Penhooker in a 1990 straight dark brown Commemorative reproduction of the 1890 Peterson Patent System 12393 stack billiard with a silver band and a bowed black acrylic 32 AB long stem p-lip. Haven't smoked this pipe in a while. Great smoker with a thick bottom so it holds less tobacco than one would expect. I may end the day with this smoke.

Thanks brother,
It’s eclectic I suppose with not much rhyme or reason behind it other than something that grabs me and ends up smoking well.
Im enjoying the photos of your recent trip and I’m totally jealous of that journey. It must be something to see and experience and to the level you have.
🤝
Thanks, Paul. I truly appreciate your words.
That journey was indeed memorable — China always leaves a certain aftertaste, a mix of history and rapid transformation.
But I must say, I’ve also developed a real fondness for Vietnam — in some ways, it’s even more intriguing than Thailand. There’s something very authentic in its rhythm and atmosphere.

I’ve heard that. I’ve been to Thailand and loved it. I have a longstanding offer to go to Cambodia which I would like to do and then hit Macao on the return trip but I don’t think my wife is up to the extensive travel involved to do it. It stays in the back of my mind though.

A little trip down memory lane tonight. I was going through some jars in my cellar and found a 4oz jelly jar labeled "Shelby Foote 2/20". My bastardized version of Mr. Foote's homemade blend was equal parts C&D Pegasus and Edward G. Robinson. The jar was full to the brim, so I reckon I stashed it away with plans to smoke it after a month or two... and here we are 5 years later.

I went to my closet and dug out the second briar I ever bought, a Savinelli Porto Cervo 673 KS. This was the first pipe I saw and bought on impulse, just from the looks of it. I didn't know anything about Savinelli, hardly anything about pipe smoking at all really. But I knew what I liked. A little over 6 years and around 40 pipe purchases and trades later, I still have that briar -- although I hardly smoke it any more -- and I thought it fitting to use it for the maiden voyage of "Shelby Foote 2/20".

I'm more than pleased with the results. Sweet, nutty, a little hint of Latakia, whisps of fruitiness. Much more smooth and mellow than I remember Pegasus or EGR being individually. I packed lightly and puffed greedily, but didn't suffer any tongue bite that usually comes from such an overeager pace.

I think I'll be smoking from this jar for the next few days, as a nice break from the Virginia/Kentucky blends I've been abusing lately. I have a few tins of EGR in the cellar, was sad to learn it's out of production from the Sutliff closure. I have no definite plans for it, but it's comforting to know it's there in case I want to put another batch of this stuff together.
Good story. I could really relate as I too have a mixture (EGR and Half n half) that I had read somewhere was Mr. Foote's go to blend. I call that jar "Shelby Foote" as well, but it's only about 3 years old. The elimination of EGR from production has bummed me out, as I'm sure it has you, as we cannot recreate. Oh well......
