War Horse Bar Alternatives?

I haven't bought tobacco in over a year, just been steadily working through my stash. One of my regulars was War Horse red, I like green as well but red was my favorite. I cracked open my last tin of red earlier this week and now it's almost gone, I thought "I better go online and buy a few more tins because I don't want to be without it for any significant amount of time."

Imagine my surprise (as well as the flurry of expletives) upon finding it had been discontinued... Really hoping some other company buys the recipe or starts making a match blend.

I'm a bit of a DFK nut but I don't know of any DFK blends with a licorice/anise topping. DFK blends are fairly common but that topping made it a hit for me. Anyone got any recommendations for War Horse red alternatives?

I keep 1792 flake on hand. I assumed that cob plug was just unsliced 1792. Does it differ at all?

If that's what I gotta do to keep the experience of a bowl of war horse alive, I guess I'll have to. What brand would you reckon has the most of that licorice flavor? And would you recommend applying it to DFK or just scooping some into a bowl straight?

You can buy this in bulk and the tin seals well, aging won’t help it though.

Ah see I have yet to try 1792. I thought they were distinct recipes but I have done zero looking into it, you may be right.

I'd say it's quite a bit sweeter than war horse, heavy on the tonquin. Not near as many rough edges and less stout though still plenty of nicotine. Doesn't have any of that licorice flavor though. Kinda tricky to get ahold of but worth a try if you're interested in a sweeter, smoother DFK blend.

I've noticed gawith's bosun cut plug seemed to have a lot more topping and a little more dark fired than their actual bosun plug. Might be a batch to batch issue or maybe their plugs turn out different for some reason. Idk, I'll give cob plug a shot.

I picked up a free one from the gas station down the road. It definitely needed some more drying time, couldn't keep it lit for love nor money.

Overall it's a decent alternative for War Horse Green, I'm still looking for an alternative to red though.

I have some in a jar from this year’s smoking pipes drop, I will crack it open and give it a try, thanks for the description!

You might try something like GH Anise Twist mixed with Dark Flake Aromatic. It’s hard to get a strong licorice flavor from a blend these days though.

The original War Horse bar was topped with heliotrope. So look for that.

War Horse was grandfathered in when the FDA ordered formaldehyde and ethylene glycol removed from most pipe tobacco.

I have 20 sealed tins of the red in an office box on a bottom shelf.

It whimpers occasionally like a lost puppy cuz I don't smoke it, and Hoover (being a cat) likes boxes that are empty, not full, so he won't mind the tins going bye bye, either.

So. $12 each. The catch being I have no desire to part it out. (Finding boxes, packing, PO trips = yuck). So, all or nothing.
