I would suggest speaking with Ernie at Watch City or John at Wilke. Both have an excellent assortment of house blends and can suggest a few that could work for you.

I apologize to the OP in the UK! However, I maintain this is a good suggestion to US smokers with the same issue 😊

Gawith's Grousemoor is a rather low nicotine smoke in my estimation. Should be easily acquired in the UK. You could also look into buying mixing tobacco or whole leaf tobacco and going with bright VA, latakia or orientals. All those seem to have rather low nicotine levels. I'd try p&c or leafOnly respectively if that's the route you want to go.

I second the recommendations of black cavendish.

Hmm. To me the only realistic approach to take would be a) pick a particular pipe tobacco you currently have and like in terms of flavor, etc., then b) try smoking a smaller amount (via size of bowl perhaps or by length of time… perhaps 1/8th the length of time you had tried when you would still feel poorly in the evening). See how that goes.

Depending upon those results, adjust upward or downward until you find a level that agrees with you in the way you wish.

Once you find that “sweet spot”, stay at that level/rate/frequency until you physically feel you would like/want more….. and then increase your indulgence….. allowing you to do so.

I tend to think this is the only route for the success you wish. And I think it really mimics how most pipe smokers navigated their way (perhaps subconsciously) when they first started their adventure.

I question that nicotine absorbed in the morning could affect sleep that night. Too be clear, I'm not calling you a liar. I would think the nicotine would work it's way through your system in a few hours.

Good grief. One of your sentences here has taken me back a little and I'm not quite sure how to take it.
You may wish to read all of my previous posts to get a complete picture of my predicament.

Perhaps it would have been better if I'd added to look for other causes of your sleep predicament. And I'm not a physician so my part was an unprofessional opinion. If you nicotine it's truly causing the sleep issue, I doubt there's a pipe tobacco with a low enough dose of nicotine to avoid the problem. Perhaps try smoking half bowls to see if your system can adapt.

Thanks everyone for your kind replies.
I'm going to try some of the very mild strength Tobaccos you've mentioned such as American Delight and Lane 1-Q, for example.
I shall also try a smaller pipe and maybe "puff" for just 10 mins as an experiment.
As I stated, I started the pipe almost 60 years ago and have been more "off" than "on" it ever since.
It's nearly 30 years since I last smoked and the reintroduction of nicotine to my system has given me something of a "hit".
I'll persevere for a while but in the knowledge that I may actually never start up pipe smoking again. Either way, I'll get back to you.
This is a very helpful and friendly forum. Thank you again for all your suggestions and concerns.

Your plan seems logical. I do suspect, that with care, you will have success.

Having been away from pipes for that length of time IMO requires a learning curve to be experienced again.

The analogy about bike riding being “never forgotten” is not as true as many would think. I remember feeling rather wobbly, unsure, and unsteady when riding a bicycle the first time after more than a 15 year hiatus. But, the ability gradually returned…. because I persevered…. albeit carefully. 😀

Rattrays sells a virginia cavendish blend, that may be the best choice. Cut down your favorite blend with that as well.

A couple of suggestions to reduce the nicotine intake/impact by a smoke other than trying with a low nic blend.
Use an activated carbon filter that takes away quite a few from the smoke.
And do not smoke the last third of the bowl. This is when I get that nic hit most.
