Good evening, friends:

Another nice Fall day here. Had a big thunderstorm blow through last night. The other night, around 9pm, I was brought off the couch by a crash outside the kitchen door. To my surprise (and some mild annoyance) was a bear busy destroying my bird feeder. The damage done, I let him have his fill and he moved on. The feeder was hanging from the roof about seven feet off the ground, so he was a sizable fellow.

Tonight, I am enjoying a fine bowl of Charing Cross in a Savinelli Punto Oro Prince 315 KS. I hope you're enjoying a nice smoke as well.

Now smoking Ken Byron Ventures Mr. Christian’s Brown Flek 2021 in a straight smooth dark brown year 1933 Parker Super Bruyere patent 10 T 81/F lovat with a black vulcanite saddle stem. This will get me to dinner time. Daisy the Feral Princess and Sleepy Suzy were staring at each other near my feet, and Daisy, who is the smartest of all the cats, decided that discretion was the greater part of peace, and went out.

Two Flakes of PS Luxury Twist Flake in my Barontini 1/2 spigot bent billiard with 9mm filter for a perfect smoke from top to bottom without issue. I stripped the prior finish I applied and oiled and waxed the pipe and had no issues with hot spots or steam holes. 1st pic is the pipe new before cracks and holes developed. Second and third are my recent oiling and waxing refinish. The bottom of the pipe and shank retain the original lacquer finish. It looks better than the prior repair I had done so I'm happy with it.

Winter in Anchorage is staying above 4000 feet so far, and except for snow on the mountain tops just outside town, it’s still Fall around my local lake. It was a perfect day for a long walk with the dog. I smoked one of my Dad’s old Kaywoodies and used his old Zippo as well. If you look closely you can just see a cursive “J” peeking out behind the pipe. While cleaning up Dad’s old house I found some old IDs and was amazed at how little his signature changed over the years. I had a local engraver put his signature on his old Zippo which makes it even more nostalgic to me. It’s cool for me to consider Dad lit this pipe with that lighter in the 1950s.

Today it was packed with my extra-topped version of C&D’s 2024 Golden Days of Yore. It was fine as it came, but I added an extra dose of cooked down rum, peppermint candy cane, cloves and cinnamon. Then I mixed in a bit of a cherry Burly blend, and finally added a pinch of finely chopped spruce needles. It’s very much more holiday-like now.
