got some tins of navy flake and chocolate flake from the latest smoking pipes shipment.
Tins were hard to open. The navy flake needed to be opened like a can of beer with a bottle opener. The chocolate took time and just twisting with the edge of the bottle opener.
The lid of the navy flake is deformed now, but BOTH lids do not reseal on the tins. Meaning, they are loose and i can sniff latakia coming from them both with the lids on.

You cannot have it both ways I am afraid. Very tight vacuum so need 'tool' to prize lid off and then lid is ruined and does not go back on properly. Or less vacuum, decent seal from rubber sealing and can take lid off without use of tool, stays in shape, easily clicks back on for re-sealing.
1 lid was damaged, other lid was not. both had the same hard vacuum as compared to mac baren square tin. But not any harder or stronger then current production rattrays 50 gram round tin.

the OLD rectangle tins i had in 2005 were superior.

Round tin lids screw on and are more uniform so different physics.

Of course plastic lids that stretch and are able to mould and stretch around the top of the can will create a very tight seal.

“Hoarding” tobacco isn’t good for the business model of a producer. A reliable market demand is healthier.
With the social pressure against tobacco, it becomes a tough balancing act however.
Write your legislators, local and federal. Support the market. Expose new smokers to the wonders of pipe smoking.
I like the hard vacuum now adopted by Gawiths; careful opening with a pipe knife can keep the deformation to the lid to a minimum and it can be straightened out adequately for reseal. I keep some of these tins in use to refill from jars; the tobacco keeps perfectly well for the time it takes me to get through it.
The Rattray's or Solani round tins push me to get through a blend before it dries, on the other hand. Nowadays, when I pop a tin of ABF, I'll bag up half the flakes in a small plastic bag and smoke as if two separate 25g "tins".

The seal on a Gawith tin only needs to work once for me.
i like teh rattrays tins. Sure they seem more affected by temperature change as far as ease of opening again, but rattrays blends seem to enjoy some drying out.
My experience has never been that of having a tin that is able to reseal once opened (especially given that I’ve never opened a {non cat-food style} tin without the assistance of some rigid tool). I’m curious as to your experience - what tins have been resealable for you? You could be saving me a lot of jar money with your answer. And, I’m perfectly willing to admit this may be a skill issue on my part haha.

those round tins are easy to open with a coin in the slot and break the factory vacuum. I put the lid on, and i come back the next day and its a struggle to take it off. Sometimes i can just twist it off like a pop bottle lid, other days i gotta pry it off.
With rattrays blends, SO FAR the plastic lid on the 100 gram canister seals better every time then the metal 50 gram tin. some days the metal tin lids are actually loose. Other times i gotta pry them off.
Ok good deal, I think I may be deforming lids as I take them off. Hrm. This is going to require a bit of a re-evaluation of my tin policy. Thanks for your detailed answer!
What - you smoke your own product? Out of curiosity- what is your favorite blend.
That makes sense now. But still, the question remains, what is your favorite blend.
Just opened one of the new silver square tins and it was sealed very well. I'd be surprised if these gave up.
