Keep it simple. Dispense with the rules, especially those of others. And I don't say this flippantly. Too much information in regard to a hobby such as pipes is not a good thing. Too much guidance in regard to a hobby such as pipes is not a good thing. It's all about trial and error. Piping is empirical, not theoretical. Forge your own path. Your enjoyment and knowledge will be the better for it.

I’ve been smoking pipes since 1972 when I was 14 and I’ve lost all count of how many I’ve had and sold and bought.

Every pipe smoker is different, every pipe is not the same, and blends all vary.

What I’ve found is this—-

You will never have a prettier girl sitting next to you than your blend smells.

So, I found out young to smoke Palidin’s Blackcherry in the dormitory lobby in my E A Carey slightly bent Apple.

In other boy’s dorm rooms (never my own) I’d smoke English blends in my WDC 11” Giant Wellington.

Countless pipes later I smoke aromatics in smaller pipes I carry around in a shirt pocket and catfish bait stinky latakia blends in big Sherlock Holmes type bent pipes.

Holmes and Watson were buddies.

Neither one ever caught the pretty girl at the end of the story, that I recall.

well, if pipe size was not going to impact the smoke, we would not have anything but a group 6 sized pipe.

we know a dublin with its odd chamber makes some things smoke different then a normal style chamber as found in a dunhill group 6, or 4 or 1.

Right now I had my first smoke of jocks mixture in a brand new peterson 80s. It was alot different then every other pipe ive used with an english blend. The style of bowl was they say, created for smoking a latakia blend.

Other than duration of the smoking time I've not noted any difference. I should probably mention that a group 6 pipe is around the size of my smallest pipes.

I've asked some smokers that have been doing it 50 years and they usually tell me when you find a certain blend that you really like in a certain pipe, then just keep that pipe for that blend. Most pipe smokers have 5 to 10 pipes that they try different Blends in.
