No wonder there is so much used clothes at garage sales. (We usually pass it by if it looks like that's what they're mainly selling.) Americans, mainly women, simply spend too much on unneeded clothing. Case in point: In about the last year my wife has attended 4 weddings. In each case she "simply had nothing to wear". So, in each case she bought a new outfit.... not just the dress but crap to "accessorize". After the wedding it all goes in the closet to seldom, if ever, be worn again. Next wedding = more wasted money! Someone shoot me, please! :(

After a few Saturdays with no good hits at garage sales, we're off again this morning to see what we can find. The weather is perfect and there are no holidays, so the two biggest garage sale killers are not here today. And besides, both web sites I look at for sales show more than I've seen in a while, including two "neighborhood" sales, both close to us. Will post more after we get home. I'm sure you're all on the edge of your seats for that.... puffy

Ok, I'm back. Hope I didn't keep you in suspense too long.

We started around 8 this morning and in the next 3 hours we must have hit at least 25 garage sales. The wife bought several kitchen gadgets (I would have thought she owned them all by now) and a couple of Xmas items (waste of money!) and that made her happy.

I, on the other hand, got the cool stuff. For the smoking room another nice, brand new, storage jar with a screw top lid, a tiny electric fan (whisper quiet) to help with the smoke in the room and... it's made for the kitchen, but what the heck!, a figure of a chef with a barrel. He will be my new pipe cleaner holder. And, not related to smoking, a brand new Igloo wheeled cooler.

Not a bad day, and we had fun for only $32.50.

Great weather this morning! There were several "neighborhood" garage sales around the city and fortunately there was one in a neighborhood not far from here that has proven to be good in the past, so off we went at 7:30am..

Along with a couple of kitchen gadgets and a nice gallon storage jar we did find a couple of items you might find interesting.

For the first time ever I bought a pipe at a garage sale... 2 pipes actually. They are both MM cobbs and have been lightly smoke but in good condition. And don't ask, I haven't a clue why one has an "X" on the bottom. I'll let you know if they smoke any good. Paid $2 for both.

The other thing I found was 3 large Cutco kitchen knives. I've mantioned this before, that we are always on the lookout for Cutco items. I think this was another case of someone selling them who didn't have a clue what he had. Probably from an estate. Anyway, they were mixed in with some other so-so knives and had a tag that said "$2 each". I haven't looked them up but I can assure you they would each sell on line for over $100 each. Boy, do I love garage sales! puffy

Smoked the churchwarden cobb today. It took twice the tobacco to fill as most of my pipes, but, on the other hand it smoked twice as long. The top half of the bowl burned well with only a couple of relights, but beyond that it became harder to keep lit and harder to relight. I suspect it's because it's difficult to get enough air down there. It smoked fine with no bitter taste or roughness. Overall I hate to admit it but not a bad pipe, so I think I'll keep it. puffy

Can't believe we did it again, Do-da, Do-da.....

Who says lightning doesn't strike twice. I mentioned the Cutco Knives a couple of times before and how we always have our eyes pealed for them. We got lucky this morning and picked up this one for $1. We're lucky because we needed a good paring knife. Oh, and the wife found a nice wall clock for the kitchen which was timely as our old one failed yesterday. I told her not to run to Walmart, but to be patient and we would find one at a garage sale and save some money. We found a great clock about an hour after we went out this morning. Cost: $2.
