It is classified as a burley based blend on Tobacco Reviews with cocoa/chocolate flavoring.
IMO, good burley alone can have a subtle chocolate flavor without any additional flavorings. I think Mac Baren tried to capitalize on this by adding chocolate flavor and then claiming they had great burley. They sure went over the top with added chocolate in the reissues of Burley Lndon Blend.

C'est La Vie Chocolate Eclair. Nothing "natural" about the Chocolate but it's very chocolate forward in the pouch and even a bit of actual chocolate taste in the smoke.

I certainly get slightly more than a hint of cocoa in MB Golden Extra, and my first taste of it led me to buy a whole pound for the cellar. I think WCC's Deluxe Crumb Cut is more cocoa/chocolate forward, but MB GE is certainly worth smoking if you come across it.

As to cocoa in MB GE, even if you ignore the user-reported summary description and just peek at just the first page of "most helpful" reviews on TR, you'll see our own JimInks leading off his review with this: "The burleys offer earth, wood, nuts with light sharp notes, molasses and a lightly more obvious chocolate as the lead component." Pipestud says: "I don't believe there is any added flavoring in this one, just the deep, rich cask Burley presenting itself in a sort of dark chocolate sort of way." And another reviewer says this: "The room note blows me away: the natural wholesome fragrance of burley pipe tobacco with its faint suggestion of roasted hazelnuts, chocolate, and cocoa powder."

I love golden extra. I think it was my 1st or 2nd tobacco I ever tried. It holds a special place in my heart.
Mid-bowl or so i got some notes of it. On first lite it is hard for me to detect. Overall Golden Extra is superb. You can’t go wrong with a pound of it in the cellar. I must have cellared 5ish pounds of it myself.

Yup was thinking of the Roll Cake I smoked last night for some reason.
Golden extra is burley.
Chocolate notes are hard for me to find, but they are slightly there.
Don’t think there is enough chocolate for the OP to consider as a replacement.
YMMV
I’m not looking for much, just the hint that something like HU Makhuwa used to deliver. I don’t want (much of) a topping or casing. Much prefer that note to be in the leaf itself.

Maybe find a good blending burley and add some of that super value chocolate blend if you want more of a coco note. Something available in bulk.

Per Jensen Masters Collection Blending Burley is one I stocked up on that hits the spot for me.

Burley can be pretty broad, and I'd never call burley naturally chocolaty. Yeah, it can naturally have a cocoa note, but never had burley that had chocolate notes unless chocolate was an added flavor.

Cocoa =/= chocolate.

I think it doesn't help that many use the terms interchangeably when it's not. Cocoa lies more in the realm of nutty, coffee, toffee.

And the nut-realm of flavor, generally speaking, has long been under-specified and amorphous almost to the point of being useless as a descriptor of flavor. When people say something is fruity, they often qualify what kind of fruity like berries, tropical, stone fruit, melon, etc.. But when something is nutty, they rarely qualify it as what kind of nutty, like earthy (walnut), woody (pecan), savory (peanut), buttery (macadamia), etc..

Great nuance in this response. Many thanks!

You are correct. I shouldn’t have used coco term in corporation with chocolate. Typing on iPhone and used it as a shortcut to type less 😩

I’m not sure if it’s being made anymore, as I just picked up a pipe again for the first time in a long time, and I know a lot of stuff has since left the market, but Russ’s “Chatham Manor” is a great burley blend that to my taste has a prominent cocoa note.

I understand the cocoa note is not from a topping - it’s just the taste of the tobacco. It’s Russ’s match for Carter Hall.

I'm surprised nobody mentioned SG Bob's Chocolate Flake yet, a crossover English aro -- maybe because it's almost always out of stock?

In the recent SP feeding frenzy when they announced some SG blends in stock, I jumped on a tin of CH flake, which is also cocoa topped, thinking it was Bob's! Doesn't get very good reviews, but I'll give it a shot and report back.
I would like to strongly second this motion.

Just because someone said it on Tobacco Reviews doesn't make it true. Certainly it is no substitute for one's own experience.
what, you mean they lie on tobacco reviews? oh heavens no...

Seriously, most of what one reads on that website is a good laughter. I am still confused as to how some people need to RUB, or even fold and stuff something as easily smoked as Prince Albert.
