Seeking Chocolate Burley Recommendations

Smoking a tin of more recent HU Makhuwa and it seems to have lost some of that chocolate note. I’m also enjoying C&D Pegasus, but obviously no cocoa or molasses topping.

Looking for something similar to Pegasus but with a mild chocolate room note. Preferably something available in bulk.

Burley and Burlier Morning Pipe from KBV might be what you’re looking for. I just opened a pouch of Burlier and it’s predominantly chocolate flavored.

This might sound like a bit of a low brow recommendation if you're accustomed to smoking boutique blends, but Prince Albert sounds like just what you're looking for! It's a mellow and straightforward Burley with a mild cocoa topping that doesn't overpower the natural tobacco flavor. It's a classic for a reason!

On one of the recent podcast episodes, Brian mentioned these two blends are the same. They are both made by STG and packaged by Kopp. I’m not sure if STG sells it under one of their labels—possibly Cascadia.

I’ve smoked chocolate tobacco since it was a fad about forty or fifty years ago. Tinder Box used to peddle a lot of it in the seventies and eighties.

Today I prefer Super Value Chocolate, $26 for 12 ounces.

I second Burlier morning pipe. Another predominantly chocolate forward burley is Briar Fellowship Bison Burley, unfortunately it’s sold out. You can really taste the chocolate in these.

Sad news. I really loved Makhuwa for its distinctive chocolate note from the Malawi burley. I’ve only got one tin left, and based on the pictures posted here in the last months, it seems clear the blend has declined in quality since Kopp decided to expand its market

It's not the same. If anyone says that, it's someone who is not a fan of burley that thinks all burley tastes the same.

Though, a lot of them end up being super similar because blenders pigeonhole burley into exacerbating that chocolaty aspect (that not all burley has) because that's the only way you can get anyone to consider burley. It's why I appreciate LJP so much, because they actually do a lot of different things with burley to really showcase "yes, actually it is not a one-trick pony". Like a new line will come out from a blender and it'll be 10 VAs, 2-3 English, 3-4 aros and maybe 1 burley if you're lucky (but almost always one that's trying to be Solani ABF clone).

Chocolate notes? I use Wilke Chocolate for my chocolate-plus mixes. For Brit Flakes, especially 1792 Flake, Bengal Slices, Burleys, etc. Also, Wilke Peanut Butter is the other blend I use for a mixer. Both work great for my challenged palate; smooths stronger tobaccos' profiles.
