I like Country Squire's Cowboy Coffee so much that I had two 32oz jars packed as tight as I could get it in my cellar. throughout the year along with more blends than I care to admit I've polished off one and had forgotten about the other until today.

The jar was marked 2/10/24, upon opening it gone was the familiar campfire smokey smell replaced by and almost sour smell not a bad smell but not what I was expecting. I checked the tobacco, and it looked fine, so I packed a bowl in a MM Durham Don and fired it up.

The almost creamy barbeque taste of the dark fired Kentucky wasn't there but had morphed into a smooth sweet for lack of refined taste buds I'll call it a fruit salad of berries and citrus and nuttiness that was nothing short of great.

I filled up a pocket jar closed the lid on the Mason Jar and ordered another 2 pounds to smoke while I let this one set so I can see what happens over the next year. If I can stay out of it.

You probably have some older stash before the Sutliff fallout where they had to source new leaf.
I got some older vs newer. Not much difference but a little.
They didn’t loose structural integrity in the process though.
A damn fine smoke! I got 4 pounds and will buy more.

Thanks for the write up. I have a few ounces of this stashed away. Maybe time for me to try again.

I remember being underwhelmed the first time or two I lit it up. I think for me, whenever a name is flavor descriptive, I get set up for some disappointment.

I know that someone saying they taste cherries isnt the same as having an actual cherry, more like a hint or note, but I think when a blend is named cowboy coffee, I expect like a blast of coffee or something, albeit an incorrect assumption.

More examples are things like KBV banana bread or dubai chocolate. I like em both, but my mind is like messed with when im surprised with different tastes than I subconsciously expected.

Some will probably say, hey jerk, this does taste like XXX. Probably a better palate than me.

My taste buds don't work the way those tasting the breads and sweet rolls do either. But after a year the flavor and aroma of this one had a complete change for me, and I liked it before and now it's a whole new blend, or maybe it's just me who knows. I ain't no expert I just know if I like it or not.

you’ve definitely piqued my interest! i’m going to give it another go.

The country squire has been hit or miss for me.

I LOVE shepherd’s pie. I’m lukewarm on tombigby, which everyone seems to go wild for. I like george’s dragon and choctaw/cherokee/indian outlaw, but so so pilgrims muse, cowboy coffee and delta honeydew.

I have a few more samples to try.

I always receive great customer service though.

I'm a huge fan of Cowboy Coffee... hope it never goes away. Same with Shepherd's Pie, probably even more so.

I've got friends that love Tombigbee, and I keep trying to like it... Maybe I will eventually.
These days, I'm nursing Sutliff Maple Shadows, which to me is like a slightly lighter Cowboy Coffee with a maple overtone.

What if Country Squire did maple essence Cowboy Coffee? Call it Cowboy Flapjacks?

Great idea! Would love to see that. I’m sure you could send them a note with the suggestion.

A great blend. I find Lane HGL also very similar and equally tasty.

I don't know much about the sourness you're experiencing, though. I've heard that Latakia doesn't age very well, and I'd say that's true based off of a few English blends I have from 2020-2022. Could be the same for dark fired Kentucky.

Latakia does age well, it simply mellows and integrates with the other leaf in the blend, in my experience. I have some Dunhill Nightcap from 2015/2016 that is fantastic, if much less sharp than a new tin. And if you can get some aged Haddo’s Delight (from 2012 or older, for example), you’ll see just how lovely aged Latakia can be.

That’s great to hear! I had been hesitant to cellar any more English based on my understanding. Interested in this Haddo’s Delight.

i think again im in minority here!! Ive been giving away samples of my maple shadows ii that people missed out on. Its ok dont get me wrong, but it just has an artificial twang to me. the topping? I taste some maple, but not knock my socks off delicious .

I love it. But everyone's palette is different, which is what makes this hobby great!

I have some of their picayune pancake and cowboy coffee, I think it’s time for some home blending. I too am nursing my maple shadows and would love to find another Smokey maple blend. Cowboy Flapjacks 🤞🏻
