I really like the idea of using a leather storage pouch for my every day blend (Bayou Morning). I take it with me everywhere in an old escudo tin and it doesn't dry out. I want to ditch the old tin and get a nice leather pouch for carrying it around but I'm afraid that it might get too dry. It probably takes me about a month at most to get through 2oz of it, so I'm not a heavy user. Do you think a leather pouch will keep Bayou Morning ok for a month, or will it get too dry too fast? I'm also thinking a pocket jar might be a good solution for me, but after reading My Lady Nicotine I really want an old, smelly, tattered, loved, leather pouch...

I've always just used a small ziplock bag inside my larger leather pipe pouch, as it fits nicely in one of the open pockets and helps keep the tobacco from drying out too quickly. For what you're asking, though, I would try either hydrating the tobacco a little more than usual before placing it in the pouch (might be a bad idea with mold issues, though) or adding one of those little humidifying packs. Or smoke faster! Hah.

Bayou Morning will do fine. So will any C&D Blend thats similar.
Here’s a few out of a dozen or more that I have within arms reach that I use almost daily.
Merchant Service, Martin Wess, Northwest Gentleman. The leather doesn't hurt anything and most are lined. It takes a long time to get “too dry” and most pouches hold 1-2 ounces but you don’t have to fill it all the way so a little works too.

Yes!
I guess that makes sense, maybe people don't actually put the tobacco straight into the pouch as I was thinking. I've wondered about the interaction between leaf and leather.
Oh that's a good point. I would imagine it would lend a nice note to the tobacco if left in there long enough. Now I want to try that out!

I have used a leather roll up pouch for years. Wear it in my vest pocket. It keeps it good for a while but after a month it would be dry. It’s lined with some sort of plastic. I like it’s a simple pop open box style where you can load your pipe and the tobacco falls back into the pouch.

I have also used a small pocket jar. Got it from country squire. It’s good to put in your pocket or what nots. It’s pretty solid and can take a hit or two. Each have their purpose and equally good.

The good ones are lined with "surgical rubber," whatever that is, and not vinyl. I carried one in a sport coat pocket for years, without noticing any drying out. That's assuming daily usage, 4-6 bowls or more per diem.

I don't recommend aromatics being carried in one, as some additives (booze? alcohol?) in some blends will dissolve the rubber in spots, making it lose whatever sealing qualities it had.

It's the only way to carry tobacco on your person, in my opinion. I no longer do it because you can't smoke everywhere you go, as in days of yore.

This is the type I used to have, and I found it to be very durable, worked well, and was pleasantly large enough to hold 3-4 ounces if packed firmly. It is the common design that was widely available in the 70s and 80s. I think the ones I had purchased were sold by Dr. Grabow and were available in both brown and black leather, but I may be mistaken. I would like another one, but sort of gave up on finding one when all the pharmacies in my area stopped carrying any pipe tobacco or pipe tobacco related items. For me, it having a zipper was helpful and with the zipper NOT being under a flap of some sort also felt more convenient to me.

I did find this image online at royalmeerschaumpipes.com, so it seems they are still available and perhaps I WILL order one.

You could keep your pouch in an airtight Tupperware or something similar for when you’re not using it. Or just transfer tobacco in/out a designated jar before you leave/after you return home for the day.

I have three pouches from my Dad and they work as intended. The unlined leather wrap was Dad’s daily work pouch. Each evening he’d load it up with however much he needed for the next day. He had an outdoors job and smoked all day. The other two were rubber-lined and closed with a zipper. He used them for dressier occasions like church or going out with my mom. In my experience, the zipper pouch with an intact liner keeps tobacco at a pretty stable humidification level for about 20 days.

I only use them when camping or going on multi-day trips with the family as I am not a heavy smoker. I always have a Zippo in a pants pocket so slipping a pipe in a shirt pocket, and grabbing a pouch with a couple of days worth of tobacco and maybe a tamper and a few pipe cleaners is a nice way to be prepared.

In my opinion, the old ratty pipe pouch is one of those items that ought to get handed down through the generations. I loved the smell of these pouches as a kid and like old razors and shaving brushes, a good watch or bamboo fly rods, they are tangible examples of what men carried and used back during simpler times.

Agree, I guess someone has to buy the first one to start handing down and It sounds like me for my boys. I think they're getting used to the fact their dad is an odd bird, so a leather tobacco pouch will be expected.

I've noticed this exact phenomenon with mine as well... goop lovers, beware...

I was gifted this one. I use it all the time. Never any issues. I don’t mind my tobacco drying out, but the moisture holds fine for me for a month. Tobacco straight into the pouch. Never any issues. It also looks beautiful.
