This is not my pipe or my pictures. I found this on eBay and have never seen a pipe like this. Stamped "BUX, Cherry Cured, England". Looks to me more like briar and not cherrywood, so I don't know what cherry cured means, also bowl and stem look to be made separately, and the end of the stem (bit) has a weird inlay of some sort. I can't find anything about this pipe, and I'm not necessarily going to buy it, but I am curious about it. Any ideas?

It appears in Who Made That Pipe as an Oppenheimer. In the 1949 Fancy Goods Brands directory it appears under both Oppenheimer and Adolph Frankau, much of a muchness since both were under Cadogan:

There were so many obscure brands floating around under Cadogan I wouldn’t hazard a guess as to what years the Bux was made, although presumably 1949 is one of them. And a few newspaper ads in the UK, US, and Australia show it being sold between 1941 and 1946. If it is indeed cherry wood this would be consistent with war-time briar shortages.

Thanks for the info. Yeah, there seems to be a lot of obscure pipes roaming around out there, and this seems to be one of the weirder ones. I've never seen a button on the stem like that one. Probably an insert of asbestos to add flavor or to remove harmful tars, no? 😝

to me that looks like cherrywood. But treated in someway. My guess from the available info is the curing was to make it more like a briar.
I looked at cherry wood pipes and the grain always seems to be circular as in a tree branch. This looks like a cross grain of some type, but now that you mention it, it looks a little more like maple to me rather than briar. I don't know.

Yeah it's odd looking. But certainly seems like something organic and something more. Taste might answer the question. I miss my old Cherry Wood pipe. Worked best with milder blends.
