I am a huge collector of the Boer shape, called underslung, tomato, donkey nut, or sometimes hawkbill also. This is not the Boer shape which is now known as an Oom Paul.

I also love the Jobey Safari and Dawes Lyon pipes, I guess they can be included here, but I try to not call anything but the Lyon an "underslung"

If you have any, feel free to share them here! This is my latest, a Rainey & Young which looks identical to Wally Frank and Bertrams Boers...Rainey and Young was a tobacconist in Galesburg Illinois. Screenshot_20250814_130920_eBay.jpgScreenshot_20250814_130924_eBay.jpg

Huge fan of the boer. I have the Wally Frank Collector (from that 1939 ad above), as well as 2 others (of the same shape...different finishes), and then boers by other brands. Excellent smokers. They are definitely a departure from "standard" pipe shapes, but I love'm.

Never heard of this shape, however I am intrigued! I’m not head over heels, but I do not dislike this shape. It makes me think. Draft hole at the bottom, you say? Very cool!

Any more, some of the Italian companies seem to make this shape more than anyone else.
Ser Jacopo does an offshoot..

Jacono, though, seems to make them with the most frequency. I believe they call it a “flamingo”.

Wow, towhee89, what an interesting shape and category of pipes. I must have had blinders on and not paying attention all these years. The Boer is new to me. I don’t recall encountering that name/shape, including 15 years in Africa. Not sure if I like it immediately, but I feel it could grow on me. Thanks for sharing!

Ok, the word "boer" is part of my last name so you'd think I would have been aware of this pipe shape name, but no, I've never heard of that shape referred to as a Boer shape. And the magazine article is from the year I was born too! Egads, I suppose I should get one now. I don't hate it, but it's not something I would normally buy.

The other images above flirt with the idea of the boer, but a true boer has it's shank connected closer to the top of the stummel than to the bottom.

@huntertrw - this very crude drawing shows how the boer drilling is done. It's a pretty severe angle from the very top of the mortise at the face throught the bottom of the mortise as seen here.

And as for most of you not liking this general shape...I'm glad. Less competition when bidding. :)
