Among dairy farmers of the Ozarks ball playing was, if not considered a sin, at least a vice. I had baseballs, softballs, footballs, all kinds of balls, but nobody to play ball with.

So we became dead shots, first with BB guns at age 6, shotguns at age 8, and our own .22 at age 10.

The greatest tragedy of my life so far has been the shooting sports have been eclipsed by the idea of guns as a weapon.

When I was a boy guns were sporting goods, each one cherished, and a lifetime possession to be proud of.

When I walk in any gun shop today it looks like an armory for civilians, which it is.
Two things can be true at once.
Firearms are weapons, also tools to catch food, and sporting equipment.
I forgot about shooting sports.
I have done a bit.
3-4 thirty gallon totes full of trophies, ribbons, awards......
IDPA, Cowboys Action, 3 Gun, 2 Gun, USPSA, NRA (yuck).....and several others.
From local turkey shoots, to Army competition, to nationals.
Gave it up a couple years ago. Except some local stuff.
And I was a firearms instructor in the Army 4th Ranger Reg, and now as a civilian.
I always forget shooting is a sport. :)

I put hunting up there as a sport as well whether firearm or bow or spear.

I played baseball, basketball and soccer (keeper) in high school.

I never played any sport at the collegiate level but I played highly competitive softball in my 20s. Our teams won several state championships (Connecticut) in both slow pitch and fast pitch and we traveled nationally for big tournaments. Best finish was 5th in the country.

I continued to play old-man baseball into my 40s and just restarted my soccer career as a mid-50s keeper in an over 40 league.

Other than that, I was mountain biking 400-500 miles a year up until about three years ago when I sadly lost the passion for it.
