A magnitude 8.7 earthquake struck off Russia's Kamchatka Peninsula on July 29, triggering tsunami alerts for the entire U.S. West Coast and portions of the Alaska Aleutian Islands, the U.S. Geological Survey said.

The earthquake was recorded at 7:24 p.m. ET, about 78 miles east-southeast of of Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky, Russia, the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) said in its updated assessment. The agency said the quake was shallow, at a depth of about 11 miles.

Why, we keep geologists on the payroll.:)

What would you do if you had a seaside property or a nice boat tied up at anchor on the West Coast?

That’s a long stretch of real estate, you know?

8.8 - amazing that no one was killed. I added the earthquake bookmark back on my browser. I am only 6 miles from the San Andreas.

This earthquake was stronger than the 1906 San Fransisco or New Madrid 1811 quakes, maybe the sixth ever recorded. 8.7 is a biggun.

But it happened out at sea, and the waves were only a few feet by the time they hit anything civilized.

In New Madrid in 1811 there were a series of quakes. I wonder if there’s that possibility here?

I don't know ... its supposed to hit 102F today in CT ... A 12 foot tsunami wave might feel pretty good right about now ... it also might alleviate a pinched long thoracic nerve on the right side. Of course, it could also cause other issues ... like drowning 🤔 puffy

The earth is vast, and we are small.

If ever in Missouri, one of the most scenic drives is along the north side of the Missouri River between Jefferson City and Hermann.

There are places where you can see miles between bluffs and there’s a levee only a few feet high. You can see that over a long period of time, the levee builders are going to lose.:)

If that earthquake had been on the east side of the Pacific instead of the west, and as strong as the Alaska quake of 1964, damages might be in the trillions.

And we’d build back, and we’d make enough babies to replace the souls lost.

On the road to Hermann are houses and barns that have to have been flooded who can count how many times.
