Not much different than a cup of coffee or a drink. When you’re done you put it down.

You've never drank from a cup of coffee after putting it down? Must be expensive eh?

I'm of the opinion now that smoking to the bottom is a myth all the old timers are playing on us youngsters.

If I had to guess I would say most people on the forum lack the proper cadence and consistent technique, myself included.

Sometimes I'll pack a bowl and smoke it down to ashes, sometimes I can't get half way through the bowl before going sour.

When you say it's done or can't be smoked. The thing is we all eventually learn when we'll be happiest dumping the bowl.
Though one old trick I've learned that varies in it's awesomeness. When the dottle is too wet you can dumb the ash and then stir and retamp the dottle. Some blends I always do that with and some never. But it's always better then struggling to light a damp dottle because you don't want to finish yet.
