Sometimes I want to smoke my pipe, but find that I can only smoke a half a bowl. Is it normal to smoke a half bowl and then save the other half to smoke 2 - 3 hours later. Does it diminish the quality of the of the tobacco? I just don't want to waste the tobacco.
Yes.
No.
I do it regularly, even a day or 2 later.

Yes! I do it almost every day. It's not unusual for me to start a bowl and set the pipe down only to finish it several hours later. It is one of the pleasures of pipe smoking. Unlike a cigar, I never feel pressured to finish.

Exactly this! Doesn't make sense to me, but a pipe half smoked and returned to later is actually sometimes better!!!

A cigar half smoked and then returned to is disgusting every single time.

If I’m not keen on spending the time for a full bowl I will just load half a bowl and smoke until the enjoyment leaves me. On the occasion when I am anticipating a full bowl, but life gets in the way or the heat of the summer day gets in the way, I always pack up the pipe and enjoy it later. Ive enjoyed partially smoked bowls many hours later on numerous occasions. It’s one of the perks of pipe smoking. Put it down, pick it up whenever you’d like!

I've learned many things from the thoughtful replies to my forum post. I think two of the most important points are to 1) Savor the pipe tobacco you are smoking and 2) enjoy the process of relaxing with your pipe. Pipe smoking is an intensely personal experience as are the methods used to enjoy your pipe. Rules are suitable for the rule makers and each pipe smoker may have an ever-changing procedure for enjoying his or her pipe. I have learned that the most important aspect of pipe smoking is evolution in process and appreciation of the enjoyment of the experience. Thank you all for your help in understanding.

At first glance I thought that the title read, Smoking Sessions - Spitting up a bowl. :)
I saw that and was afraid it was gonna be a "share the pipe with a friend" type of kumbaiyah crappy ness.

But now, splitting the pipe between sessions isnt the greatest due to the fact that the blends and flavors change differently with each component tobacco.

Its fine with a cigar, and mandatory for some brands. But with a pipe, nah

I do it all the time but didn't want to tell anyone for fear of getting in trouble. It's nice to know others do it as well. I have learned, though, to only pack half a bowl if I know I'm not going to have time to finish a whole bowl. Thanks for the thread!

There is no right or wrong way, just the way you that you enjoy. If you find splitting a bowl between two different sessions is what works for you, that’s all the reason you need.

I do this regularly. One, because ADHD has butchered my attention span, and often I set it down and get distracted. Also, oftentimes, I get a head rush from smoking, so I have to stop.

Rarely do I smoke an entire bowl in one sitting through the week. My routine is to always clean the airway with a pipe cleaner before putting the pipe down for an extended rest. When I pick it up again I will do the cleaner through the airway again and also remove the top layer of ash before relighting. This seems to make the smoke a bit fresher.

I enjoyed a half-bowl of Sun Bear this morning on the way to work. It was leftover from last night. I notice that I tend to fuss a bit with getting the pipe lit on a fresh bowl. After I get a char and it burns down into the bowl a bit the pipe settles into an even burn that lasts a while. Picking up a half-smoked pipe and lighting it I skip the fuss to get it going. I settle into a nice smoke right away.

I have 3-5 bowls, half full most always. It’s great for comparing or just to switch it up. If a bowl tastes ashy, I dump the ash, stir up the often over tamped remains, exhale softly with my hand semi covering the bowl to get any small stuff out (not in my mouth first puff). It sometimes tastes even better for me. Enjoy and take some notes if you care to. That one pipe with that one tobacco, lightly packed……

I believe smokingpipes had an article awhile back on Winston Churchill who, although known for cigars, would often smoke pipe and had many a half smoked bowl strewn about at any given time. Someone will hopefully fact check me on this as my memory is not what it used to be but if memory serves, you’re in good company.

That's good advice. I, too, experience the bitterness in the start of a relight. Now I know how to handle that. Thanks ... Joey.

Thanks for the feedback. I hate wasting tobacco and I knew there was a better way to handle a relight. My pipe goes out while I'm smoking and a relight it without a bad taste. But after sitting for a few a few hours, it needs a refresh. I'm going to try your method. Thanks again ... Joey
