Do we have any years when these transitions happened? I see that the first ones are made in London, that helps but mine isn’t and also the old ones don’t have the metal rings. Could it be a later 90s iteration, homage to the old series. My pipe looks brand newThe line started as Captain Petersons and was eventually shortened to Captain Pete’s and then again Capn’ Pete.

Your pipe is Republic era, so it could be anywhere from 1950 onward to the Ludisi era. I think the first shortening from Captain Petersons to Captain Pete took place sometime around 1939-41. The Capn’ Pete pipes were short lived and sometime in the early Republic era 1950-55but most likely replaced again by the older Captain Pete moniker. Judging by the style of rustication on your pipe, I’d put it sometime between 1960-75 but that’s just a guess.Do we have any years when these transitions happened? Getting to see all these old Peterson shapes makes me sad that they're no longer around. The little panel (78) is just perfect. The line started as Captain Petersons and was eventually shortened to Captain Pete’s and then again Capn’ Pete.

I’ve been after a Peterson 4 Square for a long time. I’ve yet to find one.Getting to see all these old Peterson shapes makes me sad that they're no longer around. The little panel (78) is just perfect.
Peterson has had a few partially rusticated lines over the years including some Captain Pete’s from the republic era. That looks like a Peterson’s K-Briar to me. It was a budget line just above seconds and dummies. The K stands for Kapp. While we are on the subject, have any of you seen anything like this before - a partially rusticated Pete but not a Jekyll&Hyde. Sorry for the photos but that’s what I have to work with for now.

Yes I’ve heard of the K line , wasn’t it only for the Danish or Swedish market, hence the Danish “P. Winslow” style of rustication?Peterson has had a few partially rusticated lines over the years including some Captain Pete’s from the republic era. That looks like a Peterson’s K-Briar to me. Let me guess the answer is somewhere in the BOOK…Yes I’ve heard of the K line , wasn’t it only for the Danish or Swedish market, hence the Danish “P. Winslow” style of rustication?

Probably.Let me guess the answer is somewhere in the BOOK…![]()
No, K-Briars were sold internationally as far as I know. I’ve seen adds for them in American publications ranging from the 40’s to the 70’s like Pipe Lore and Roger’s catalogs. I’ve also seen many partially rusticated Irish Seconds, Dummies, and Shannon Airport pipes.Yes I’ve heard of the K line , wasn’t it only for the Danish or Swedish market, hence the Danish “P. The seller is extremely unhelpful with regards to providing further photos but he says it’s supposed to be a Kildare. Having this information in mind while zooming on the photo I am starting to convince myself that I see Kildare under Peterson’s…No, K-Briars were sold internationally as far as I know. They've got those 444 pipes on SP but they don't do it for me. I've also seen one owned by a collector named Lance Dahl who had a a small one like from the catalog you posted (though it had a different, three digit number that I can't remember).I’ve been after a Peterson 4 Square for a long time. Agreed, there’s something off about the new 444’s, the proportions are a little off. They've got those 444 pipes on SP but they don't do it for me. Yeah it looks elongated in an unpleasant way. Hopefully Giacomo and/or @swilford can bring back some other panel shapes.Agreed, there’s something off about the new 444’s, the proportions are a little off.

Thank you so much, that gives me all the info I need! I did my research on Irwin’s blog but I focused on the series and not the shape number.Perhaps more of the info you seek from Mark Irwin’s blog?
