I'm just trying to figure out this flavor thing. It must be in there someplace. 🙂
Never timed myself but have found that the thicker the bowl the better the flavor. Example tobacco taste better out of my Savinelli Estella than my Sav Roma. The thicker bowl absorbs the heat producing a cooler more flavorful smoke in my opinion.

I'm curious, when you smoke a bowl, how long are you generally taking? My bowls generally last 20 minutes or so if everything goes smoothly. I never smoke all the way to the bottom and there is always a little that I waste at the end when it seems to get harsher.
When I first started smoking I found my Savinelli inadequate and bought pipe kits and carved huge (too huge wish I had made smaller) bowls. Now my Savinelli pipe is perfect and I find myself smoking maybe 10 minutes, putting the pipe down; letting the pipe go out and picking it up and relighting 30 minutes or so later. I can't say why the change occurred; it just did. Bottom line I am enjoying smoking; now more than ever. If you go my route and make a pipe yourself from a kit with a larger bowl I would advise you learn from my mistake. You can't put briar back. You can however make the bowl a little bigger than is customarily produced. There are a plethora of pipe making videos. I used a dreml.

It really depends on the size of the pipe’s chamber and the cut of tobacco. I have tiny pipes that last twenty minutes at best; some deep chambered pipes will last over five hours with a crumble cut. In a pipe with an “average sized” .75" x 1.5" chamber, about ninety minutes to two hours? It varies with the way it’s packed, the dryness of the tobacco, the cut—lots of variables.
Now does that mean five hours of constant smoking, even if at a slow cadence?

Yes, five (or more) hours of constant, gentle smoking, which involves just having a closed mouth and breathing normally to create a bellows effect. The chambers are usually quite deep on the pipes I use for long sessions, which are almost always during my UFC viewing on weekends—with preliminary fights (three hours), the main card (three hours), and post show analysis (one hour), I’m generally looking at close to seven hours of smoking time—I do usually take a dinner break, which lasts about thirty minutes, but this is not counted as smoking time. Because a knockout can happen in a split second, I don’t like to take my eyes off the screen—reloading a pipe during a fight is a sure way to miss something, which is why I opt for pipes with larger chambers for these smoking sessions. The choice of tobacco plays a big role in the lengthy smoking time (dense cuts like crumble cakes work well; ribbon cuts generally burn too quickly for my purposes). One of the pipes in my rotation can fit just about my entire index finger in its chamber and the smoking time can be in excess of seven or eight hours with that particular pipe; very often, that specific pipe bests me with a nic hit during the post show and I cannot finish smoking everything in that chamber.

Ya... This question really comes down what size your bowls are.

I'm usually a smaller bowl kind of guy (20-30min) but this morta monster can probably sustain at least a 4-hour smoke..

The idea behind this 'chimney' was to smoke unbroken flakes in their lengthy 'original' form:

I get bored easily. Not that I can’t do a long smoke - just that I don’t care too much- unless I am with a friend or my dad. Then…. Can keep her lit what seems like forever.

If it is just me, I put the pipe out after 30-40 minutes and start with different.

I waste tobacco and toss good unsmoked tobacco that is still in the bowl into the weeds.

I do everything wrong one can do when a person smokes. I believe and follow piping superstitious beliefs and I purposely do the opposite of what people say to do on the forum.

in time, you will find your own cadence and if you do, it’s because you’ve become your own drummer. You may quote me.

When I was newer I'd usually get about half an hour or so on average but lately even with the same pipes I'm getting an hour to an hour and a half. Slowing down works Id wager.
