I spent my youth hanging around Max Gordon’s Village Vanguard and many other jazz venues and for my mind the most exciting big bands were Buddy Rich, Don Ellis, and Thad Jones/Mel Lewis. I cut lawns to get my cover charge and complimentary soft drink. The cocktail waitresses wisely ignored me.
