Carl Dean, Dolly Parton’s husband since 1966, died Monday in Nashville. He was 82. No cause of death was announced.

“Carl and I spent many wonderful years together. Words can’t do justice to the love we shared for over 60 years,” wrote Dolly Parton in a statement. “Thank you for your prayers and sympathy.”

The family has asked for respect and privacy at this time.

Dolly Parton met Carl Dean at age 18, in 1964, outside a local laundromat the day she moved to Nashville. Dean was 21 at the time and they were married in Ringgold, Georgia in May 1966 with only her mother as a witness shortly after Dolly released her first album, Hello, I’m Dolly.

Xxxx

I sure hope Carl had lots and lots of friends in Ringgold Georgia.:)

Carl Dean was a very successful contractor.

I’d best have respect for the dead and close now.

I'm sure the cause was STG.

My good, good wife texted me Carl Dean died, because she knows how much I love country music.

And right then I realized I’m the luckiest man that’s ever lived.

And I said oh God thank you, for never going out fishing with any other man but me.:)

When she asked me from across the room if she minded to sit at my table I turned and looked over my shoulder, saw nobody there, and then realized , that there really is a God, without any doubt.:)

Since 2000, she’s been my Pretty Miss Norma Jean, the one Porter ought to have kept.

I like how you tell us that the family has asked for privacy and respect, and then post some intimate details. Ha ha.

I like Dolly a lot, and I didn't even know that she was married. My wife seems to know who everyone is dating, married to, or has had an affair, etc... I think it's a girl thing.

My favorite song of hers was Jolene, a song about a woman victim blaming her husbands potential affair. "if she only didn't have that pretty hair." puffy

When I die my good, good wife won’t ask the world to forget how she became famous singing into another man’s eyes while I labored at my law office alone.

Carl Dean bought the shoes on Dolly’s feet.

And her most famous song is dedicated to Porter.

m

Didn’t Dolly do a good job hiding from the world she was married to Carl Dean?

He may have replaced the ones that Porter put on her feet, but she bought him everything else after that. My wife's quip, not mine puffy

My mother was the Headine Pretty Girl Singer at the 1946 Camdenton J-Bar-H Rodeo.

Daddy would be out milking and we’d watch Porter and Dolly and my mother would say Vanny, girls like Dolly are the reason murder is illegal.

And when she left Porter because Porter chose his own wife, Mama danced around the room.:)

We just loved, Pretty Miss Norma Jean.

Always thought he handled her entertainment career the right way - by not being involved at all.

1966-2025… They watched the world change together.

I’m glad I retired and did my last divorce yesterday.

My wife was able to file all the paperwork online for me, because from 1983 - 2025 I’ve depended on a beautiful set of eyes to greet all my clients, offer them coffee, type everything I wanted, pack my leather briefcase, and be right there at my office while I wore thousand dollar suits, and stood up in court resplendent and prepared and with my suit, tie, and shoes all perfect, because she’d checked it.

Do I look like a lawyer, honey?

Yesterday morning she woke up enough to say you need to comb your hair, sweetie.

Now I won’t have Carl Dean to use as an example to men of why divorces cost so much.

They are worth every penny.

I used to say, do you want to be like Carl Dean, and the day you die all the papers will print how Dolly Parton’s husband died?

Seriously.

The Parable of Jolene

My mother used to watch Dolly Parton perform Jolene live, and say to me

Pretty Miss Norma Jean knows exactly where Dolly is right now and it would not be that hard, to locate Carl Dean.:)
