Dumping Ash

It seems that just a few minutes after establishing a nice silver-white layer of ash on the top of the bowl, the tobacco below will not keep lit. I end up dumping the ash and essentially have to start over with a charring light, tobacco burning hot, etc. is there a way around this?

Don't pack so tight and don't tamp hard. Very light tamp almost effortless. If you shake your ash just do it a little bit not the whole thing.

Tamp lightly

If there is too much ash and you tamp too firmly, the ash may smother the ember,

If there is too much ash, just gently tip out the excess

As you mentioned, it may be your packing technique. I rarely dump the ash, tamp,relight, all is good.
