A Jarring Question.

When you jar tobacco, do you pack it down tight or just dump it in? Does it matter?

I pack it is as tight as I can to get as much in as I can. I get about 1-2/3 lbs ribbon per half gallon and 2 lbs flake per half gallon. About 8 oz per pint jar. I also vacuum seal. But that's just me and how I like my tobacco. I've never heard of issues with not packing or leaving out the vacuum seal. It's personal preference as I see it.

2oz/50g into a half pint, 100g into a pint.

Whatever it takes to fit that is how tight I pack it in.

I used to really shove it in there. I've backed off of that a little. The shag cuts are broken down to a fine dust if you really cram them in.

I’ve found that I can get One Pound into a 64 Ounce Mason Jar without much difficulty. But it is definitely packed tightly.

My feeling is that packed tightly means less oxygen. In other words, it may preserve it longer.

Someone can chime in on this.
