Bust them up in the jar, tin, or bag then load them into the pipe. I've mostly gotten away from them though just because of their tedious nature. I'll often break up a cake and cube cut flakes before jarring just to save time when packing.
Thats why I usually break everything down before it goes into jars or mylar. I can do a few oz at a time, dry it all out, and jar it so its ready when I am. Otherwise I could wait hours before my tobacco is crunchy enough to smoke.

This is my prep kit. The chopping board is 4½" square, the little slip joint is carbon steel and kept hair popping sharp, the dish serves for drying tobacco and doubles as an ashtray, the piece of A4 paper is essential (trifolded then folded in half it forms a square slightly smaller than the chopping board).

I've got a small table that sits by my recliner, and I have modest cutting board that I can get out that is inside the whatever you want to call the piece of furniture on the other side of me.
