Interesting Piece of History

Recently my wife visited family in Europe and her father in law is a roofer who works on historical buildings and churches. He found this and knows I collect pipes so he sent it to me. The detail and metal work is amazing. I'm no pipe scholar but my guess is it came from Asia and would have been used for opium or hash

what's it smell like? That might tell us what it's original use was. Though I have seen pipes like that in historical pictures being used for tobacco (according to the captions and such).
