Back in 2021, before I took up pipe smoking, I got a number of D&R and Stokkebye for RYO injection. I abandoned it because I was getting a dryer sheet taste, which I now realize was now the cheap filters and not my tobacco. Anyhow I cellared them and when finally smoking the Stokkebye No 84 I had in a pipe, it's fantastic (as well as the rest of the D&R blends - obviously, the tubes I have weren't cutting it!)

Anyhow, I still have a ton but looking online it seems the Turkish Export (pipe version) has now been discontinued. Doing some more research, saw a Reddit post by someone lamenting the discontinuation of the TE84 and a commenter said that Newminster 84 is basically the same thing - due to rights/legal issues, now it is manufactured by them. Has anyone compared the two or does anyone have more info on this? Just was curious. I did see Villiger makes it, and I know that was a related company to Stokkebye, or something like that? I really love the Turkish spice from this tobacco, and it smokes fantastic in the pipe. Ample nicotine also, I'd say maybe medium strength. Scratches the itch for an original formula Camel, but even better methinks.

I believe I've got a pound of Turkish Export socked away in the cellar if interested. It's got at least 5 years on it and hasn't been touched since jarring it.

is there anything available on the market that will substitute for Stokkebye No. 84 Turkish Export?

thanks. on the wild chance, has anyone tried to home blend something similar? I'd like something even more Turkish forward. Izmir and/or Samsun with sweet virginia?

You could try this

It's expensive at $10 an oz, it's a shag cut for RYO.
I believe that is the now discontinued Stokkebye Turkish 84 in question. It used to be shag cut, then no longer to avoid the cigarette regulations. Maybe they had a lot of it stockpiled or something? Or further cutting it on the premises? Or priced so ridiculously that they're the last holdout?

From what I was always aware, the Turkish 84 in the pouches and tins is shag cut and is still available, in a new design. And it's expensive because of cig tobacco branding and tax.

The old bulk 84 was a regular pipe cut. It was darn good.

Newminster 84 i would give a try. It might not be exact but may be the closest match out there.

Also technically you are not allowed to buy the cigarette tobacco online only in store - but the bulk pipe blend was available online although I have no idea if they were the same Blend or not I'm just sharing what all I know about this.

I’ve cellard a few pounds of 84. It’s great by itself, or as a base blender. Sort of a Swiss Army Knife of pipe tobaccos. Get a pound or two of 84 and a half pound of Latakia, Perique and Dark Fired and you suddenly have dozens of on-the-fly blends!
