Going slow never helped for me. Reading old instructions from early in Europes fasination with smoking and tobacco helped. Sip. I don't worry about how many puffs or letting the pipe rest. One thing I found odd was that smoking like that the pipe stays lit better even when put down for a minute or more realistically in the pocket to run in somewhere you can't smoke. Good test for if you're pulling right is to light it with a match and draw like you do when smoking the flame with sag but not actually go into the pipe. Also noticed that smoking more gently and casually means I don't get irritation even if I smoke one pipe after the other and get far less palate fatigue.
