I have a collection of unsmoked pipes from the 50s tucked away in boxes for the day when new pipes might be as difficult to obtain as tobacco might be.

I want to be able to break in unsmoked pipes decades from now.

Do you do the same?

If a man has a knife, he’s never without a pipe; he may be without motivation, but he’s never without a pipe simply because they are difficult to acquire from a storefront.

Coming from a man who no doubt cellars knives. Am I right boomer?

If you teach a man to fish…

You’re no stranger to the concept with your home grown tobacco.

To be fair, I’ll buy what I can, when I can, to prepare for rainy days; but I feel that being able to rely on myself is absolutely rewarding to a level with which no collection can compete.

After hearing you first mention this, I've considered putting my 3 unsmoked pipes away for either future or emergency use. And just forget about them and buy more. I actually could make an entire kit from scratch. I have an unused Zippo with the sticker on it I got at a rummage sale too.

1 cob, 1 briar, 1 meer. A tin of Burley flake, A Zippo, fluid, flints wick, pipe cleaners, pipe nail. All inside a leather pouch I don't use.

When I saw "1 cob, 1 briar, 1 meer" I immediately started singing those words to the tune of the George Thorogood song "One Bourbon, One Scotch, One Beer". Now I can't get it out of my head...

No, if I buy a pipe I smoke it. And if for some reason I stop smoking it, I trade it off or give it away. Usually I cull by trading pipes for store credit. I'd have to burn out a lot of pipes not to have some left to smoke.
