I saw a post awhile back that someone was interested in a Peterson meerschaum. There is one on the bay for $500. A 1969 unsmoked. Also some Nording meer estates for $150.
I dont know but my thought is if estates sell for $200 or a bit less would you dare smoke it? One bowl and its no longer unsmoked. My thought is this would interest collectors more than someone wanting one to smoke. I feel smokers would be ahead to buy a nice estate. This pipe jumped out at me but the price is wild, especially once I pay eBay's elevated shipping and import taxes.
Is that what a sample like this would go for, generally?
It does seem silly, but I have done it. An unsmoked 1950 Dunhill Shell LB with all packaging and paperwork. Sometimes I look at it and ask myself why, but to me it is a good piece of tobacco history.Yeah that's a good point I didn't even consider the idea of buying a pipe NOT to smoke. Seems silly, doesn't it?
Ahhhh I was just going to @ you!Peterson meets are expensive. That's given. So I'm just waiting for something that would catch my eyes.
Too expensive. NOS meers were available even few years ago. Even then they were US$600. Occasionally, a good estate meer comes up for auction. They usually end up US$300 and above. Then very occasionally, some estate specialist will sell something that comes in. But usually at premium. So just waiting to see what comes up and what I can pay at that moment.Ahhhh I was just going to @ you!
Do you own any Pete meers yet?
That would be one company, if you were only smoking, that would be nice having a meer option!
Back when I owned and operated a pipe/cigar store, I bought some Peterson Tanganyikan meers to sell. I couldn't resist and took one for myself. If looked a lot like the one in the pic below. The pipe smoked well and I liked the fact that they were supposed to be more break resistant than regular meers. I did finally sell it because I hated the P-bit mouthpiece. Sometimes I wish I had kept it and made a new stem. The majority of Pete meers are African (Tanganyikan).
You can still find the occasional unsmoked one
The rare ones are the Turkish meers. Esp. the Sherlock Holmes series
I'd hate to hazard a guess as to how much a complete UNSMOKED set, with their pipe rack would go for these day
You, sir, have a lot more willpower than I do!It does seem silly, but I have done it. An unsmoked 1950 Dunhill Shell LB with all packaging and paperwork. Sometimes I look at it and ask myself why, but to me it is a good piece of tobacco history.
$500 would buy a pretty nice artisan pipe…I like all the African stuff, especially from Manx. Peterson gets preference but p lip aside it's the same place making Barling, Nording, GBD, and house brands. They used to go around $40 and under regularly, no clue what the hell happened. People used to trash talk them as being inferior to Turkish, probably still do. All the ones I've given away would be worth thousands, most were had around $10-$20, most expensive was $40. I won't sell them but I'm not bothering to add any with this $500 nonsense.
Not so loud...
