They do take some getting used to. I’ve noticed that it works best if you don’t overfill it also.

The jet tube is the same concept as a generator in a Coleman lantern. The fluid becomes a gas vapor. You don’t get the same fluid taste as you do from a regular Zippo type lighter. And they work well in cold weather.

Don't touch the tobacco. Just suck the flame into the tobacco from above.

Don't touch the tobacco.

It doesn't hurt it, and with the Beattie it's nearly impossible to avoid it. I've done more damage to rims trying to bring the flame to the tobacco than trying to bring the tobacco to the flame.

Now that I think about it, you ain't wrong. All my pipes have black marks on the lids, and I try to be careful.

I have a couple Beatties and enjoy them. They have a ‘mini flamethrower in your pocket’ vibe to them that’s very appealing.

That said, you may also like to pick up some of these. Candle lighter w/ soft flame. Butane & refillable. Adjustable flame size. Cheap. About impossible for a (sober) man to burn a pipe rim with one :

You use a Beattie?

It's not like sucking flame from an Old Boy or a Zippo.

I like them. They have to be maintained, cleaned in order to work well, and fueled up every few days, but I find myself using them more often than other lighters I have.

Maybe I missed something. Beattie makes soft and hard flame lighters. I assumed he was using a soft flame. Are you saying he used a torch?

Yeah I see now. I saw adds before and with different angles I thought they were selling two different lighters.
