As the title says, and why?

I'm looking through some auction lots and there is a lot of opportunity for new hobbies. But really how many hobbies does one have time for?

I'm kind of all over the map with mine. I don't really give any the time I need to.

Has anyone just given up on a hobby or past time? Why?

Yeah, given up on collecting pocket knives, swords and daggers, pistols, long guns, tobacco pipes.
Guns and knives, i lost interest. Just how many does one need.
Tobacco pipes, if I need another I'll just make it.
But I still collect old money, silver, gold and precious stones.

For me hobbies are a way to learn, skill development, and it turns into a life style. So, while I may not still go after something as I did in the past, it is something I still do when I want.

Playing music
Honing straight razors and collecting vintage blade holders
Restoring 1930-55 Esterbrook fountain pens

Right now I am learning how to be retired...LOL!!

I used to collect stamps, with an emphasis on U.S. Precancels and South Korea, but my interest died off some about five years ago. Why? I think it is primarily due to a prioritization of time and with young kids and a busy work schedule. I'm sure down the road I'll pick it back up.

Years ago I was into lampworking (melting and shaping glass) for a couple of years. I made glass beads that my wife used for jewelry and I made a few marbles. I never could make a marble round, they always turned out a bit lop-sided. I lost interest and my wife quit making jewelry. I recently gave everything to my nephew who became interested in glassblowing and lampworking.

I raised rabbits for meat. That hobby lasted about a year. I got tired of cleaning the cages and my wife wouldn't eat anything I cooked.

I had a couple of VW bugs that I started to restore...money pits...I sold them.

Wine making about 20 years ago. I made 50 bottles for my niece's wedding. Gave that hobby up after a couple of years. i still have a few bottles.

Here's a bottle of Green Apple Riesling from 2003.

I went through a lamp working stage too. I still have boxes of beads and pendants. Sold the torch and stuff years ago. It just took up too much room in my studio.
I also collected VW bugs during my first marriageI had 12 at one time. It always starts with one, then you need parts and start buying more, ha ha.
Also, I’ve engraved firearms. Mined turquoise, collected art, archery, golf, had a large casting forge for bronze work, vintage bicycles…. Uhhh, many more that this cup of coffee hasnt jogged my memories of yet.

I used to skateboard a lot.
But I’ve gotten older and life’s gotten busier - now most of my free time is spent watching my son play baseball and soccer.

I have a couple of longboards that I roll around on with my 7 year old grandson. I'm 62 and I'm not attempting any tricks. I just push, hop on and roll around. It's a great way to get some exercise and spend quality time with my grandson.
I have a Z-Flex Banana Train 41" Double Drop and a Santa Cruz...can't remember the model, it's at his house.

If I listed all the hobbies I’ve had it would take up the whole disk storage of the forum. That said, I still come back and visit most of them from time to time. As to why? Short attention span mostly. I’ll go after something with manic intensity…until I don’t. Then I’ll move on.

I got the turquoise itch every time we went out to Arizona to visit our daughter. That faded when we got back to Illinois. Archery was another hobby years ago. I have an Osage Orange longbow that I need to take out one day.

Right on man! Enjoy the time with your grandson.
Longboards are fun, my son was into them for a minute but he’s lost interest now.

I golfed quite a bit in my 40's and 50' but the guys I golfed with all retired and they decided playing on the weekend sucked. So I gave that up.
Went to a ton of baseball games and then as they became prevalent on TV and concession prices went into orbit had to pretty much give that up. Still watch a lot on TV. I have a buddy who is as big a fan as I am and we go to ten games a year. This year he says to me "You know if we were still drinking we couldn't get drunk on $100 dollars a piece today".
Played a lot of bridge at the cigar store I frequented. My reward for that was all the guys I taught the game to would show up before I could get there and start a game so by the time I could get there, there wasn't enough people left to play.
Used to read voraciously but have sort let that side. Basically reading old mysteries from the 30's, 40's and 50's is enough now. Maybe four books a month.
Was a big Civil War buff for a good period of time. Read just about every major work there was. I sort of got tired of it after a while. Seems like no matter how much I read everything turned out the same.

Personally, Ive found that when Ive taken an interest in something, there’s often an initial intense period where I accumulate knowledge & some of the artifacts associated with that field. After awhile, Ive learned enough to form my own informed opinions & preferences. I don’t really drop an area of interest completely; what I learned stays with me & informs my actions. - One example is with knives. I have what I need & want now. I know what fits my specific requirements. So, I guess I’m really not a collector in the strict sense. The initial accumulation of stuff is part of discovering what works best for me.

I've given up on a few collections. Buying, selling, trading saxophones, clarinets, revolvers, pistols, folding knives, ties, suits, fedoras.... yes, I said fedoras ?☹️. Not sure if I would call them hobbies. I just get enough of those things and don't see a good reason to get more. Unless of course a really good deal comes along. ?

I did give up on photography once film died. Photography through computerized machines is cheating and anyone can shoot an incredible photo. Used to be that you needed talent to do that.
