I was also looking in the past before at Tekin.

Oh SMS I just remembered.

For a while I was really considering getting a Meerschaum from Fehmi Yavuz.

Speaking of Fehmi Yavuz, I just noticed him, and several other carvers are no longer listed on Altinok. Altinok’s Master Carvers list use to have around 6-7 carvers, now there are only 3 hmm ?

So far I've been reasonably impressed with Kenan, IMP, AKB, the Emin Brothers, SRV, and currently have a Sadik Yanik on its way from his workshop.

I’m an admirer of all 5 of the other makers you mention, and I agree all 5 make pipes well worth what they charge (Radice usually comes in much less than $390 and of that group are probably the most bang for the buck). For the right Altinay, I would happily pay $390. That said, 99 out of 100 Altinay pipes won’t be the right one for me but the same is true for the other 5. What has worked well for me is thinking in terms of buying the pipe, not the price. If it’s a special piece that you’ll enjoy for 10, 20, or 30 years $100 in either direction is irrelevant. If it’s not special, why bother at all?

Very well stated.

$390 is about as expensive an Altinay model there is. That pencil thin shank and carbon fiber insert is probably the reason.
Yes, it is the carbon fiber insert that raises the price on that model. It is not average for Altinay...it is sort of a specialty model (for lack of a better term). They seldom have one of those for sale on the site. Their prices on the standard models are quite reasonable for the quality, imo.

Oh meer smokes differently then a briar. But not really that differently. If anything it's a little clearer but also a little more dull at the same time. I wish I could explain it better but it's nothing dramatic. Frankly I feel like watching it color is really the most fun difference.
Oh and no matter how neglectful I've been the meer has never soured. Where if I just stop cleaning my briar they get funky and nasty.
I hear you about funky and nasty, but to tell you about this from my experience, I probably didn't do the alcohol/bristle cleaner/cleaning for the last five years of my smoking, with never a sour even though I largely smoked the same pipes.

Rusty, from the Christian Pipe Smokers board, said that when he does deep cleaning, he loses flavor, such that his plan was to smoke his pipes until they closed up.
