I’m a Burley smoker. The admission, sounds like one’s introduction to an AA meeting.

While I can appreciate the creamy, smokiness of MM965; Latakia hasn’t called to me.

Nor has straight Virginia made me sit up and take notice. The “baked bread” VA smokers espouse, as well as it’s “citrus”evades me as does it’s natural sweetness.

Perique? Tasty and I’ve enjoyed HH Acadian, which is, I suppose a true perique blend, but I’ve not since craved it’s flavor. HH Dark Fired was a tasty treat as well.

Aromatics very few, aside from the heated air that is Captain Black Regular and Royal. My only OTC forays into the genre.

I remember my first smoke. A baggie called “Hazelnut” from a store’s jar that smelled “very nice.” Soldiers were emerging from slumber as I’d puffed. I can still hear one happily exclaim, “They brought us hot chocolate.” Then another voice in the darkness, “That’s someone’s pipe you idiot.“ It was completely tasteless, but it smelled great!

English, Orientals, Cavendish and VaBurs have all graced my pipes since that field exercise in 1994.

Yet, I’d never “really tasted anything” in pipe smoke, until Carter Hall. All of the popular OTC’s followed but, in my ignorance, I did not know that “Burley” was the common denominator. Nutty, Buttery, Creamy, Delicious Burley!

(MacBaren) Norwood’s chocolatey notes made it a strong favorite. But Cocoa is no longer a flavor I seek but do still associate with Burley. Solani ABF is nice.

One fateful day I was introduced to GRANGER and a voice from the heavens cried out as angels sang and tears of joy enveloped me. Finally, a tobacco that I could actually taste! Creamy, Nutty Burley Goodness but with something else... is that Blueberry? Indeed! In both tin note and taste I get hints of Blueberry and Chocolate and Nuts! I’m hooked!

Granger is my all time favorite blend and never disappoints. The flavor arrives as soon as it takes to flame. It’s mild and cool and tastes great!

I like everything about this blend.

Today, here is my humble rotation. I can tell the day of the week by the Tobacco I’d smoked the day before.

Monday - Granger *

Tuesday - Carter Hall *

Wednesday-Prince Albert *

Thursday-Carter Hall *

Friday-Granger *

*Second bowls are always Granger. This happens more often than not.

Saturday-Pegasus

Sunday-Try New Blends or one from the Cellar. No Granger. No OTC’s on the weekends.

Prince Albert - Nuts and Cocoa.

Granger - Nuts and Berries.

Carter Hall- Buttery, but mild.

Pegasus - Earthy, Nutty, Nic hit.

I've never tried Granger but I would like to. I find OTC Burley blends relaxing in ways I can't describe. I think Granger is sold by the tub only so unfortunately I can't have it shipped her for risk of heavy duties... So more for you guys

Well, someday I’m gonna try this Granger stuff you all speak of but the blueberry is a turn off to be honest, but you are the first one I’ve heard describe it this way. After hearing @ashdigger talk about Granger in such high regard it inspired me to give it a whirl. Now, the main thing keeping me back is that it’s out of stock at the place I choose to do my business with. The second thing is, I don’t really want to commit to a whole freaking tub, I made that mistake with Edward G Robinson’s pipe blend. The third thing, after all this Christmas shopping, I’m flat broke. Do they sale Granger in a pouch anywhere or do ya have to buy a tub to try it?

Hawky,
What I perceive as berry, others have described as a “sour or tart, tangy background note.” It’s not cloying, but adds a signature.

STG makes no mention of the fabled “Wellman Process” but many say its fermentation and meant to give it that unique note.

The American OTC’s appeal to those who taste Burley. The toppings differ between blends. But whatever Granger’s recipe, it’s nutty Burley with something extra that really appeals to me.

Just seeing this after my long winded post. Would you mind sharing where I can buy it by the ounce? PM if you are more comfortable with that. I totally understand if you don’t want to share your sources, so no pressure either.

yep! I guess it was 4noggins I saw.. BnB says they have the pouches, but I'm sure they don't. I can send you some though. PM me your address.

Yes.
I’ve had them all. I don’t like the more heavily topped OTC’s and I consider Half n Half and Velvet to be in that category.

I believe SWR and Granger are identical base blends with different toppings, yet both are lightly applied. Just rough cut Kentucky Burley.

I group Carter Hall and Prince Albert as similar blends, both ribbon cut, roll your own types.

Granger has always been marketed as strictly pipe tobacco, it’s rough cut not ideal double duty for cigarettes.

I have never gotten anything like blueberry from Granger, btw.

Rich,
I believe you. I was out to dinner with another couple and was enjoying Dewars scotch and I made the comment in conversation that I get a “banana candy” taste in Dewars. With that, my friends wife grabbed my scotch and eagerly sipped it.

Rich, whatever she got, wasn’t banana candy.

Btw. I get “milk chocolate” when I sip Jameson 12 year.

Hey man, more power to you. Some of us are blessed with the ability to taste more than others.

Gentleman,
I never try to sell anybody something they didn’t wake up wanting to buy and I certainly don’t want to Trigger anyone’s TAD, especially for an OTC sold by the tub.

We’ve all been there; based on a review, we part with our hard earned and met with disappointment. I did that recently with Lane RR. Pricey $43 a can and... it’s not Edgeworth (to me).

Tastes differ widely.
