I only do the rim. Just me personally, I'm not too concerned in preserving the laquer on th rim.

My cob chambers get cleaned with unscented baby wipes after each smoke, same as meers.
That I must try.
I have some clean cobs and some cake cobs. The clean ones I use a paper towel after smoking and occasionally use a q-tip with whatever alcohol is around to clean the rim, chamber, and mortise.

the only scorched rim I ever got was with a cob. And there was a single rouge gust of wind that seemed to intensify the flame. It was not windy or even breezy and then this gust of wind pushed me about six inches back and concentrated the flame right in one spot which could have been avoided if I was not more concerned with not getting knocked over and also assumed that it would kill the flame too. Was wrong about that. When people have a charred spot on their rims I always wonder. It didn't just move the flame it seemed to intensify the heat.
Belt sander... if I’m in the shop, and I happen to have one that I feel the need to spruce up, I flip the switch and touch it to the belt sander for a second. ?

When the rim gets beyond your liking and can no longer be wiped down, swirl it on a sheet of sandpaper to “freshen it up”. Repeat as needed.

I like a good ole used rank cob. They are great pipes and I prefer the worn in patina of a cob over most of my briars these days. Cobs are best because you can use them, you don’t have to favor or overly protect them.
