One of the real joys of using a corn cob pipe -- to me -- is not having to worry about its appearance, or cleaning it on the outside. Its simple, utilitarian, and rustic aesthetic allows me to smoke it without worrying about its future or any possible mishaps that might occur today. To my eye, the funkier they look, the better.

The stuff on the rim isn't usually char from the flame.. It wipes off, I'd wipe off the rim to save 10 bucks.

unless you've burnt the rim.. which I doubt. If your burning the rim, then you aren't using your lighter properly.. and that's not the case.

I think part of the charred look is unavoidable. Unless you smoked your pipe perfectly level all the time, and kept your flame dead center and a half of an inch away while lighting.

Even with best practices, mind seems to char at the back of the bowl from the angle it's in while smoking. I just go with it.
