No one seems to talk about this on the Google or YouTube. Noticed rim getting scorched, but spit and shine doesn't seem to work like on briar. Just let it get darker and darker? Or is there a solution?

I use a wet rag every month or so.. always brings my back, to about 90 percent.
I don’t bother. I consider it part of a cob’s “patina.”
One of the real joys of using a corn cob pipe -- to me -- is not having to worry about its appearance, or cleaning it on the outside. Its simple, utilitarian, and rustic aesthetic allows me to smoke it without worrying about its future or any possible mishaps that might occur today. To my eye, the funkier they look, the better.
My very first pipe was a Country Gent that I still smoke regularly. It is on its way to a nice dark brown, even in the areas that don’t see flame. I think the older they get, and the more used they are, the better they look.
The cob is much softer than briar. My answer would be to not apply fire directly to the rim. Learn to light without burning the vessel. And, obviously, do not flame the rim. If you get to not liking the appearance, toss it, get another. For most the cost of a cob is pocket change.
The stuff on the rim isn't usually char from the flame.. It wipes off, I'd wipe off the rim to save 10 bucks.

It's not burnt. It's toward the stem where it gets that soot/tobacco stain or what not. Kinda thing that comes off with spit if it was briar. The cob pipes are smoking so well, it would be shame to just dump them. Not as expensive as briar, but keeping it neat and clean makes me feel better.
yea, I like the look of a well used cob too. Mine will eventually get so bad that after smoking my hands look like I've been changing a tire.
I think part of the charred look is unavoidable. Unless you smoked your pipe perfectly level all the time, and kept your flame dead center and a half of an inch away while lighting.

Spit on the paper towel after cleaning the bowl after every smoke. Then about every dozen or so smokes , wipe the rim with a little Everclear on a paper towel...repeat until towel comes clean.
The problem with that in a cob is that it liquifies the lacquer MM uses, and smears the stain.
