I feel like the lid should be open when smoking. Maybe the idea is to close the lid if you have to pocket the pipe mid smoke.
Try drilling a hole or 4 in the kid and I think the problem will be solved.

They smoke from the bottom up. Would kind of be like drilling a hole in the bottom of a regular pipe.

Smoking in disagreeable weather perhaps. It loads from the top, lights through a screen in the bottom and the cap is there to seal it.

That very first image reminds me of the piece of driftwood my sister found and brought back for me when I was a new pipe smoker. But, back then, I had never even heard of an upside-down pipe (actually only first heard of them last year).

I'd wrap that up with any other clunkers and send it off to the estate department at SP, for store credit on a real pipe. Even a few bucks would do. Or of course put it at auction on eBay as a priceless treasure in hopes of buying a new White Spot cavalier.
