I Can't Taste Anything

Recently I lost my taste halfway through a bowl. I had smoked quite a bit that day and I was enjoying a bowl of 1792 Flake when all of the sudden, I couldn't taste anything. This was on Sunday and I still am not able to taste much of anything no matter what I smoke. I am starting to get concerned since it has been almost a week. I do not feel sick or have any allergies so this is very strange. I have recently started using snuff, but I am not sure if that is the cause. This is very disheartening because I don't even have any incentive to pick up my pipes anymore since I can't enjoy the tobacco flavors.

is this just pipes you can't taste? Or is it just pipes if you ate a steak or drank a cocktail can you still taste that?

maybe the snuff is overpowering the smoke flavor? do you use snuff then smoke a pipe?

I've got Lakeland really strong stuck in my sinuses before and everything tasted like Lakeland for 2 days.

I'd say that's the old palate fatigue. The only cure is to slow down or get a broader rotation. Your brain is lazy because that's how brains are. They do so much that they're allowed to be lazy sometimes. But you keep tasting the same stuff and the brain says I already know what's happening here I refuse to pay attention to this thing. It's pretty much the same way that when you first go to the beach it smells all oceany and strongly oceany but by the next day you barely even smell that fishy brine at all. The only concern here is just that you can't enjoy your pipes as much. That's why my favorites are my slowest smoked blends.

oh and maybe eating something very strong tasting in another direction will help. Part of the reason wine is recommended with dinner is to "cleanse" the palate. But really you're just keeping your brain interested in what you're ingesting instead of getting bored. That's all you've just made your brain bored with tasting the same stuff over and over.

Well I may have messed up my olfactory senses by doing too much. I was using snuff and smoking pipes simultaneously. I stopped using the snuff on Wednesday to see if it helps.

I am not so sure about that. I have tried Haunted Bookshop, And so to bed, Pembroke, penzance, Ennerdale Flake, 1792 Flake, and Balkan Mixture. I can't taste any of them.

well your food bill just went down because you can eat literal garbage!

Yeh, probably snuff, so we are only taking 3/13ths on that now.

Did you taste things before? that would rule out just being one without the "ability" to taste.

Stop the snuff, get some saline solution so you can flush your nose for a couple of days. Use the saline once every hour or two. See if that works for you.

although they all taste different. The tastes are all built from the same paint palate so to speak. If the snuff was the problem it would effect the taste of drinks and food as well. However snuff can really cause scent fatigue which happens faster than palate fatigue and scent is a big part of pipe flavor (smoke when you have a big clogged up sinuses) and you're bombarding your nose with snuff and pipe smoke your brain is getting bored with tobacco scent and flavor. Just chill a little longer between snuff and pipes and you'll taste them again. There is too much of a good thing.

how many different pipes do you smoke? It might trick your brain to switch up the pipes sometimes. If you have one or two pipes there is no trigger that what's coming out of this pipe isn't the same thing as last 20 times. That's another possible fix is to make sure you rotate implements
