Kevin Godbee
Thank you for joining us for The Pipes Magazine Radio Show—the only radio talk show for pipe smokers and collectors. We broadcast weekly, every Thursday at 8 pm eastern USA time and are available on nearly all podcast sites and apps. Listen on your computer, tablet, phone and even in the car! Our Featured Interview tonight is with Al Franklin. He’s a pipe collector with a colorful and interesting past, which includes motorcycle racing, the CIA, Daniel Ortega, and The Sandinista revolution. He certainly isn’t the average pipe collector, and he definitely isn’t the average person. In the “Pipe Parts” segment Brian will discuss famous pipe smokers. We are extending the JDRF auction one more week for Brian’s daughter, Samantha. Sit back, relax with your pipe, and enjoy The Pipes Magazine Radio Show!

Tonight’s show is sponsored by Sutliff-Tobacco.com, CupOJoes.com, SmokingPipes.com, Missouri Meerschaum, 4noggins.com, MeerschaumStore.com, Cornell & Diehl, and Savinelli Pipes and Tobaccos. Please give them some consideration when making your next pipe or tobacco purchase.

  • Hi Brian,
Nice synopsis on famous pipe smokers. I think the pipe helps them think out their ideas and carry out their explorations.
Al Franklin – interesting background and career. He has been around the pipe carvers tour. I tend to agree with his opinion on Castello pipes. The American carvers are taking their place on the international stage. Interesting interview.
Great to hear about the success of the JDRF fund raising.
    NIce show. CU in Chicago.

  • Really enjoyed the show!
I especially enjoyed SmokingPipes’ new commercial. It was nice to have a straightforward ad from them.
Just one minor correction: “Dr. Seuss” is the pen name of Theodor Geisel. Seuss was his middle name.

  • Really enjoyed the interview with Al Franklin. I can imagine he could tell some ve “colorful” stories beyond the PM Radio Show that are not PG rated.

  • Good show. I enjoyed the pipe parts segment and the rant. The interview not so much.

  • Thanks for another great show Brian (and Kevin)!! You guys hit it again. Although not American, I do enjoy a very American show. Bring me a war veteran and Dizzy at the end and you’ll definitely find a happy fellow down here in the other side. On the famous pipe smokers (which I’m never tired of hearing more and more about) I think that in their search for the deep things of life, they could not deny the pleasures of tobacco, and it gave back its reward, because it’s not only something we enjoy, it also improves and equilibrates our thought a big deal of a lot. April, 1st is a funny day here in Brazil, we make lots of jokes with people, but I don’t think it’s half as strong a cultural thing as it is over there in the States. The question that never goes away is “Why is there a “Franklin” in Al Franklin’s Bible? A coincidence?

  • I almost forgot, the introductory comment: “The song is called Bebop and it’s a… in a…honor of Dizzy’s fingers” was a great one, sure to be remembered for years to come!!

  • This was probably one of my favorite interviews thus far. Thanks guys for making my day go by that much better.
