Welcome to the 7th weekly episode of the Pipes Magazine Radio Show. Our featured guest tonight is Tad Gage. Tad is the author of “The Complete Idiot’s Guide to Cigars”, which originally had a chapter on pipes in the first edition. He is a collector of high grade pipes, tobaccos and cigars. He has two of his own pipe tobacco blends on the market. Tad was also the publisher of The Compleat Smoker magazine in the early 1990s.
Tonight’s show is sponsored by SmokingPipes.com, Missouri Meerschaum, and 4noggins.com. Please give them some consideration when making your next pipe or tobacco purchase.
We hope you enjoy our 45-minute show produced just for you—the pipe smoker and collector. The following link will launch a pop-up player. Alternatively, you can download the show in iTunes after the initial broadcast is complete here.

My grandfather didn't smoke a pipe, but my uncle and some of my elementary school teachers did. In 1998, my neighbor Sam invited me out, and we ended up back at his place where there was a cigar humidor, and pipe rack on the coffee table. I had my first cigar, and then decided to try pipes too. I love the elegance and relaxation of smoking a pipe. In 2002, I started learning how to make websites, do SEO, and create content. I had a cigar content site and forums from 2005-2008 when it was bought out. In 2009, I launched PipesMagazine.com, which is now the largest, busiest community forums, and article content site for pipe and tobacco enthusiasts. We have one of the longest running pipe and tobacco focused podcasts since 2012 with lifetime industry veteran, Brian Levine.

Put my tobacco in the sun!?!? Crazy bastard. How about a tanning bed? Would that work? 😉
This show is pretty geeky. I hope Nelson likes it. Mark Ryan opened that barrel of Perique.
Moar episodes. Must. Have. MOAR.
Isn’t that a charatan that Tad is smoking?
How about a commentary on the “personality” of the different pipe shows? Chicago is more international and deals with buy/sell of “new Wood”. NASPC is a buy/sell show with a more of a estate pipe focus. CORPS is more of a ‘Social’ event. It seems to me that each show has its own “Character”. What do you think?
Yes, in the picture, Tad is holding a Charatan.
As the show ends I find myself wondering where the time has gone. All very interesting and entertaining. The conversation with Tad Gage was so nice. He certainly is opinionated, but he didn’t come off sounding edgy or pompous.
.
I fully agree that multi-ply toilet paper explains why there are fewer pipe smokers — but I thought that was common knowledge! 🙂
Tad Gage is just one of the great people in our hobby. If you haven’t read his article on “The Mysterious Barling” you are really missing a treat. Getting the Doctor of Pipes award is a real signature accomplishment. Seems like we do a poor job of publicizing this award.
To me you can’t have a pipe show unless Tad and his wife Cyndi are there.
Oh, capstan is one of those gizmo’s use on ships to wind ropes around and to apply force to them.
Trying to figure out how Tad twisted his right around to put it on top of his left shoulder.
Best show yet. As far as the rant, try going to war and getting a hit in the a$$ from a AK47. You will be so happy with all the TP that’s out now days.
Thanks for the feedback, Brian. Tad was, as usual, en-Gage-ing. On paper and in person (as a member of the Chicago club, his attendance at our meetings is always enlightening), he is a terrific source for info and insight. Another great show, congrats.
Brian, this show felt like a comfortable pair of slippers. It was relaxed and informative; it just felt right. The cellaring bit was very helpful (…I can’t get enough of the helpful information on tobaccos and pipe care); the interview was great. The Disney halloween recording was you being yourself; it’s great when a host is genuine. The rant was so true; everyone can relate to toliet paper! Keep this feel to the show and you’ll convert a lot of listeners to the brotherhood. Thanks!
so far, i have enjoyed every episode. i find them very informative. my favorite interview so far is with Mary from McClelland’s. more Mary please!
oh yeah, regarding episode seven; my favorite time to smoke my pipe is while i am reading, and my favorite thing to drink while doing so is to sip on some nice bourbon! nice interview. more of that too please.
Great show! Great interview with Tad Gage. Keep up the good work guys!
Great show guys, very good interview with Tad. I liked the discussion about aging tobacco. The shows keep getting better and better. Congrats.
Hey Brian… Tad Gage was great! Interesting stuff… Have a safe & successful time to Vagas!
