Pipes Magazine Radio Show Episode 733: Jon David Cole

Tonight on The Pipes Magazine Radio Show, we welcome back John David Cole, head of The Country Squire, for an update on the new location in Jackson, Mississippi. Since opening the doors in May, John David and his team have settled into their much larger space, which combines the traditional Country Squire pipe and tobacco shop with a cocktail lounge.

John David talks about the grand opening, the thinking behind the new space’s distinctive mid-century-modern design, and how adding the bar has changed the character of the business. He also discusses choosing pipe brands and artisan makers for the shop, what he looks for in a potential partner, the renewed interest he’s seeing in smaller pipes, and the surprising growth in local pipe and tobacco sales.

At the top of the show, Brian begins a five-part deep dive into the differences and similarities between Escudo, Peterson’s Deluxe Navy Rolls, and Davidoff Flake Medallions.

  • I was intrigued by the lead up to your comparing and contrasting those three tobaccos. It will be interesting to hear how these similar blends differ in taste and quality of smoke.
Hearing Jon David’s review of the changes in the new Country Squire store and lounge was so nicely detailed and exciting. I also enjoyed much of the backstory of the Squire and its “lodgings”.
Dom Flemons’ song honoring Arnold Schultz was wonderful, and a bluegrass treat to one of the major influencers to that genre.
“The Bottom of the Bowl” suggestions for use of “the bowl” were absolutely on target (coincidently, another “rule” for use).
Thanks for a totally entertaining show.
