Pipes Magazine Radio Show Episode 621

Pipes Magazine Radio Show Episode 621

Welcome to The Pipes Magazine Radio Show Episode 621. Our featured interview tonight is with Ben Straughan. Ben is a 25-year old pipe smoker that is part of our ongoing series of pipe smokers that are under the age of 30. He is from Ontario, Canada and works in radio broadcasting, but is transitioning to be a mobile crane operator. Ben has been smoking a pipe for two years. He was drawn to it because the stereotypical image of the calm, contemplative, gentleman pipe smoker has great appeal to him, and it is what he aspires to be like. At the top of the show we will have an Ask the Tobacco Blender segment with Jeremy Reeves. Jeremy is the Head Blender at Cornell & Diehl, which is one of the most popular boutique pipe tobacco companies in the USA.

  • An interesting, nitty-gritty, explanation of blending from Jeremy at the top of the show.
Young Canadian Ben was a delightful guest, whose introduction to pipes is quite similar to most of the under 30 bunch, learning and growing in the craft with help from the internet. He seems to be advancing quickly with surprising insight and zeal.
The Q&A segment was fun. I enjoyed your arguments about conveying the value of pipe smoking to others.
Bryan (spelled the wrong way) Adams’ “Summer of ‘69” is a favorite.
Good luck with your campaign to remove those sports from the Olympics. BTW, Sport Climbing and Breaking? Really?
Thanks for another always entertaining show.

  • Fairly good show. Real good explanation of making pipe blends and keeping them consistent from one batch to another. I guess we could have asked how he accounts for seasonal differences in tobaccos.
Then you had young Ben on the show. You are sure this guy wasn’t on high quality cocaine?? Even for a Canadian this guy was really out there. This guy has to be the happiest person on the planet. He seems to be going about the business of learning pipe smoking in a reasonable manner. He has a lot to learn but he seems to realize that and is making baby steps to becoming a regular pipe smoker.
Didn’t care for the music but that’s nothing new.
Tennis, soccer, basketball, and golf are just some of the events you could drop. They ran the highlights of the American women celebrating the gold medal performance in “Artistic Swimming”. I was expecting Esther WIlliams to perform in that. It’s about as useful as “Break Dancing”.
