Samuel Gawith Bracken Flake – Pipe Tobacco Reviews

Samuel Gawith Bracken Flake Pipe Tobacco Tin

This is another blend from Samuel Gawith that is offered in both tin and bulk. However, I have not smoked this blend from the tinned version, only the bulk. So I can not comment on the differences in the two. But if it is anything like the other SG offerings, there is probably little or no difference between the two.

The tin aroma is a strong but sweet tobacco smell with a little smokiness mixed in and a tang in the nose. The moisture level is a little on the high side and letting it dry a little wouldn’t hurt. I prepared the flakes (Fig.1) by folding them in half and fully rubbing them out (Fig. 2). I loaded the pipe with a gravity fill and, using very light pressure, pushed the tobacco down in the bowl with my thumb to level it off.

I performed the charring light and was greeted with a lightly sweet, lightly tangy, aroma and taste that was accompanied by a very faint smokiness. There was also some smell that I couldn’t quite place, it was interesting and appealing. I settled back for the smoke.

The first thing that I notice is some pepper on the tongue. When the pepper would dissipate, it would leave a light sweetness behind on the tongue. The pepper on the tongue kept coming and going as I smoked the bowl. Sometimes it would happen, then it would stop for awhile, then it would start a little later. There is also a taste and smell that took me awhile to place. I am pretty sure that it is Tonquin. The amount of Tonquin, if that’s what it is, is very light in Bracken Flake. It compliments the blend nicely. Whatever the taste is it kind of reminds me of licorice, but not quite. It’s a little hard to explain the taste. I wouldn’t say it is licorice, but it reminds me of it.

This is a pretty complex blend; there are a lot of flavors and flavor changes going on that keep the bowl interesting all the way through the end. It packs some strength and, like the description says, has a unique flavor that is very nice. I really like this blend and will be smoking quite a bit more of it. If you like stronger tobaccos, I Highly Recommend giving this blend a try!
