Thank you for joining us for The Pipes Magazine Radio Show—the only radio talk show for pipe smokers and collectors. We want to thank you for listening and being one of our loyal 15,000 weekly fans. Your host is Brian Levine. In tonight’s “Pipe Parts” segment Brian will talk about “How to Break in a Pipe”. He will describe three different ways to do it… and none of them are lighting it and holding it out the window of your car while driving very fast. Our featured interview tonight is Makis Minetos from Patras Greece. Makis is from Achaiki Amadeus, a family-owned wood mill and pipe factory. They supply briar to Stanwell, Vauen, Tsuge and several other factories and individual pipe makers, and they make their own Amadeus pipes as well.

Tonight’s show is sponsored by Sutliff-Tobacco.com, CupOJoes.com, Amadeus Pipes, SmokingPipes.com, Missouri Meerschaum, 4noggins.com, and MeerschaumStore.com, Please give them some consideration when making your next pipe or tobacco purchase.

We hope you enjoy our 50-minute show produced just for you—the pipe smoker and collector. The following link will launch a pop-up player. Alternatively, you can download the show in iTunes after the initial broadcast is complete here.

  • I see you are still Memorex…resting in Vegas
everyone has their own method to break in a pipe. I hate breaking in new pipes. I just fill it up and smoke it, daily. shake the ash in the pipe when done prior to emptying it. It works for me.
Makis Minetos, Amadeus pipes is a new brand to me. I will have to check them out. I wonder if they do a hawkbill?
Fantastic discussion on harvesting briar. The portion on the development of ‘standards’ was the first time I had heard about it. Great discussions on processing, cutting, and economics of the blocks.
Nice musical selection – Sunrise. It fits for your location, definitely not Pgh.
IT might be tough to beat this show….But you can do it!

  • Great interview with Makis Minetos of Amadeus Pipes so I wanted to know about Amadeus Pipes so google them and looked over their selection of pipes. Here is the link to their website http://www.achaiki-amadeus.gr/index.html I also found that pipesandcigars.com sell the Amadeus line of pipes.

  • How could I not comment on this show. In a word, a Greek word, aristourgyma (a masterpiece). Your conversation with Makis produced the most interesting and informative description of forest to ebouchon I’ve ever heard. And, the video of the briar block processing you’ve linked (right below the “Join us on Facebook” ad) is a must see. I agree with Makis’ final exhortation, in Greek, to keep smoking and do what we all can to protect that freedom.
Lovely choice of music. I think a lot of us, of a certain age, were introduced to this music in the late 1950s, in Disney’s short documentary “Grand Canyon.” Gould’s interpretation is terrific. Well, hear you next week.

  • Thanks for the nice responses guys. This was one of my favorite shows too. I didn’t know that the Heath Tree had to be at least 30-years old, that the blocks were boiled for 14-hours and then rested for a year! Wow!
