The Pipes Magazine Radio Show – Episode 35

Kevin Godbee
Thank you for joining us for The Pipes Magazine Radio Show—the only radio talk show for pipe smokers and collectors. We want to thank you for listening and being one of our loyal 15,000 weekly fans. Your host is Brian Levine and in tonight’s “Pipe Parts” segment we will recommend some specific tobaccos. Two weeks ago, Greg Pease recommended some different tobaccos in his line that represent different genres. Tonight Brian will mention some other brands and blends that are also good examples of different styles that you might want to try.  Our featured guest is Pipe maker Chris Morgan. Chris makes some extremely creative high grade pipes, and he has also made name for himself with his unique “Briar Cigar”.

Tonight’s show is sponsored by SmokingPipes.com, Missouri Meerschaum, 4noggins.com, and MeerschaumStore.com, Please give them some consideration when making your next pipe or tobacco purchase.

We hope you enjoy our 45-minute show produced just for you—the pipe smoker and collector. The following link will launch a pop-up player. Alternatively, you can download the show in iTunes after the initial broadcast is complete here.

  • Hey Brian,
Tried and true tobacco blends – Dunhill style mentioned are good. FM is great. Arcadia is ok also. VAs – Flakes are ok, smoke hard and tongue will get bit. I may suggest the Butera Royal Vintage Tobaccos. 1Q is a good starter w/BCA.
Of course, I would be remiss if I did not recommend McClelland #5100 mature VA, Red Kake, found in bulk, my dailyl smoke.
I am not familiar with Chris Morgan or his pipes. I may have to look him up.
Andre Segovia – Now that is one pipe smoker that can play a guitar!
I like your cell phone idea…
    keep up the good programming.
    PGH.

  • Great show tonight! Interesting conversation, terrific music choice (BTW, there’s a lovely photo of Segovia smoking, what looks like, a Dunhill Spigot), and, an inventive rant. The advertisements, I love ‘em! And, as Granddad would say to those who hock you about them, “You kids today, blah, blah, blah.”

  • OK Brian, had to laugh over the rant. I had that exact conversation with a buddy yesterday (hadn’t heard the show yet). It really is a rule that guys seem to know, we just need to get the word out to the women in our lives!!!

  • Another file show. Really enjoyed the pipe parts portion that discussed the various pipe tobaccos.
Chris Morgan was one of the 7 winners in the 2012 GKCPC pipe carving contest.

  • Thanks for another great show. As a novice Pipe guy, I really appreciate all the good info. The pipe parts segment is my favorite. I sometimes take notes! I have tins of 965, Escudo and Blue Note and very much enjoy them all. And regarding the ads, I actually look forward to them. I have a hard time understanding why someone wouldn’t enjoy ads about a hobby the love. Bravo Segovia too. Until next Thursday, happy trails…
    Best,
    Bill

  • I question whether Arcadia can be considered an “English” blend as it contains no latakia. But it IS part of McClelland’s “221b” series, so THAT’S pretty “English”. I’m confused.

  • You’re absolutely right, Kevin. I just like to correct Brian whenever I can.

  • Hi Alan!
Yes, that’s the picture. The CD shown is quite wonderful. I’ve had it for years, and listen to it often. I have almost all of his recordings, either on 78s, LPs or CDs. I saw him perform in concert here in Chicago a few times. An absolute Master.
And, yes Brian, more Segovia would always be appreciated.

  • Excellent show, thanks Brian. I am thankful you did not list any of my favorites in the beginning segment. When I did smoke English blends, 965 was a staple, great classic blend. The rant was the best ever, we definitely need to start a movement, love the Geneva Convention take. People who do not abide by the rule should be considered war criminals.
