The Pipes Magazine Radio Show – Episode 31

Kevin Godbee
Thank you for joining us for The Pipes Magazine Radio Show—the only radio talk show for pipe smokers and collectors. We want to thank you for listening and being one of our loyal 15,000 weekly fans. Your host is Brian Levine and in tonight’s “Pipe Parts” segment, the topic is deep cleaning your pipes. (Listen closely, and see if you can tell us why we probably won’t be getting advertising from a pipe reamer company anytime soon.) Our featured guest is Bill Roberts. Bill has been a contributing writer for PipesMagazine.com, and will soon have a regular monthly column for his tobacco reviews. He is a member of The New York Pipe Club, and is an active member in the forums here using the screen name RomeoWood. We’ve got some great jazz, the winners of the fund raising auctions, and it’s somebody’s birthday, so get ready to sing Happy Birthday with us.

Tonight’s show is sponsored by SmokingPipes.com, Missouri Meerschaum, and 4noggins.com, Please give them some consideration when making your next pipe or tobacco purchase.

We hope you enjoy our 45-minute show produced just for you—the pipe smoker and collector. The following link will launch a pop-up player. Alternatively, you can download the show in iTunes after the initial broadcast is complete here.

We’d like to thank and congratulate Robert Dressler (HorseDoc1) for making the winning bid on last week’s auction of the Bjarne Viking Classic Pipe for the JDRF Fund Raiser. His winning bid of $101 is much appreciated.

Brian himself beat out everyone for the Volume One of The Pipe Smoker’s Ephemeris with his wining bid of $177.

We raised a total of $496 through the auctions on BriarBid.com, plus an additional $260 in cash donations. Thank you to everyone that contributed.

  • Hey Brian,
Good advice on the heavy cleaning. Of course the time period is a function of how heavy you smoke the pipe. Good tips, especially regarding the use of reamers.
Good interview with Bill Roberts. Here is one gentleman that goes to great length to evaluate a tobacco under a variety of conditions.
    Another great music selection.
Great news on the JDRF program. I have never been to TAPS and hope to get there some day. OK, Washington (PA) area pipe club meets the 3rd Friday of the month at Bill Kotyk’s house at 6:00 PM. Contact me for further information.
I plan to see you in Chicago and we can have a discussion while smoking a pipe.
Keep up the good work! — Pittsburgh, PA

  • Another terrific and informative show. Bill’s insights were quite interesting.
Brian, I pour a small amount of alcohol (I use Bombay Sapphire, 94 proof), just enough to clean the pipe I’m working on, into a shot glass. I hardly have anything to discard, ‘cause I use most of it. Then, I wash off my brush with a bit of dishwashing soap. If I have more than a couple pipes to deep clean, I have a few clean brushes at the ready. Since I use my gin for more potable endeavors, I wouldn’t think of putting a brush, regardless of how clean I think it is, into the bottle. Just sayin’.

  • As someone who is has only recently been introduced to the pipe smoking culture, I found the interview with Bill really informative and to the point. You can tell he has the utmost respect for pipes, and it is clearly reflected in his writing work as well. Who knows, I may just find myself at a Pipe club meeting one day 🙂

  • I really don’t know where the time goes during the enjoyable hour taking in all of the recommendations from Brian and Bill on the radio show. It has to be the fastest hour of the week. Bill aka RomeoWood goes above and beyond in sampling/reviewing tobacco blends and can really nail down the nuances from his experiments. I really like the idea of how Bill evaluates the tobaccos in pipes of different material, briar, meerschaum, cobs and clay. And over such an extended period of time. Great show, and looking forward to next weeks program already.

  • Romeo shared a freshly popped very old tin of Escudo last summer at the NY Pipe Club meeting, and that Don Carlos produced a monumentally memorable smoke, thanks to him. He is very thorough and disciplined in his thinking and methodology, which for a wannabee engineer like me, is very admirable.

  • I acquired a 30 year old tin of Cope’s Escudo and shared it with a number of very experienced smokers and to a man they said it was the finest tobacco they ever smoked. It was simply glorious. Even people with troglodyte taste buds like myself recognized we were in the presence of greatness.
I was at our local B&M a few weeks back and was showing some friends a Florov canted egg and asking the best way to ream it. One of buddies who is a world class pipe repairer just reached over took the pipe from me and said “The best way is to let me do it for you”. So I did and he did and we all lived to smoke another day.
